From February 17 to 23, the Berlinale will once again visit arthouse cinemas in the city and surrounding region. Each day, when the Red Carpet is rolled out in another neighbourhood, the spotlight will be held on a movie theatre committed year-round to keeping cinema culture alive.
Berlinale Goes Kiez will kick off on February 17 at Toni & Tonino. The screening will be both an opening and a farewell, as this cinema, so rich in tradition, will be continuing under new management. The Berlinale’s visit there will serve as an occasion for symbolically handing over the key. On the following days, the Red Carpet will move – in line with the series’ trusted concept - from hood to hood: from the centre of Berlin to Kleinmachnow, at the edge of town; and, for the first time, to Adlershof where, for more than 20 years, Kino Casablanca has maintained its position as the only arthouse cinema in Treptow.
This year the following seven neighbourhood cinemas will host screenings:

Sunday, Feb 18 – Neue Kammerspiele (Kleinmachnow)
Monday, Feb 19 – Tilsiter Lichtspiele (Friedrichshain)
Tuesday, Feb 20 – ACUDkino (Mitte)
Wednesday, Feb 21 – filmkunst 66 (Charlottenburg)
Thursday, Feb 22 – Neues Off (Neukölln)
Friday, Feb 23 – Kino Casablanca (Adlershof)
In short video portraits (www.berlinale.de) announcing Berlinale Goes Kiez, the managers of these cinemas invite viewers to come and get to know their venues. Moreover, they will be on hand to greet visitors personally at the screenings, and in doing so underscore the openness and charm of Berlinale Goes Kiez.
In 2018, the special series will be expanded for the first time to include a Berlinale film presentation for prison inmates. Das schweigende Klassenzimmer (The Silent Revolution / Berlinale Special) by Lars Kraume will be shown in the auditorium of a penal institution (JVA) in Tegel at 5.30 pm on Friday, February 23. Following the screening, the director will be there to discuss the film with the audience.
Festival Director Kosslick: “Berlinale Goes Kiez celebrates neighbourhood movie theatres as sites of communication as well as the diversity of our local cinemascape. With the special screening at the JVA in Tegel, the series will be doing even more to live up to its aim of breaking down barriers and facilitating cultural participation.”

Tickets for regular screenings are available from February 12 at all Berlinale ticket outlets, online and at the respective neighbourhood cinemas.
