2nd Annual Tackling Torture Video Contest- Extending Submission Deadline Until June 1, 2015

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA In late November 2014, the long-awaited summary of the US Senate report on its investigation of the of the use of torture by the CIA was released. This heavily censored summary confirmed the widespread and repeated use of torture, and its authorization by both elected and appointed government officials. This information shocked the nation. Yet, despite the evidence, no one has been investigated or prosecuted for these illegal actions. Ironically, the only person who has been prosecuted with any connection to our torture activities was a whistleblower imprisoned for exposing them (former CIA analyst John Kiriakou.

A video contest addressing the pressing issue of accountability is currently underway. The Second Annual Tackling Torture Video Contest is a project of Minnesota's Women Against Military Madness's (WAMM) committee on torture accountability. It is now accepting 30 second to 5 minute videos from amateurs and professionals worldwide with a submission deadline now extended to June 1, 2015. Four cash prizes will be awarded. For complete information go to http://tacklingtorturevideocontest.webs.com/.

The jury consists of international experts on film and on the torture issue, including Prof. Peter Kuznick, American University, co-writer of the 10 part TV series “The Untold History of the United States” (2012), Sebastian Doggart, director of the critically acclaimed documentary “American Faust:From Condi to Neo-Condi” (2009), longtime peace activist, Andy Worthington, and Joseph Jolton, Minneapolis filmmaker and instructor video arts at Minneapolis College of Art and Design and the Blake School. Winners will be fêted at Twin Cities events on June 26th, the UN-designated Torture Awareness Day and at other Twin Cities events TBA .

A new, even more worrisome recent development is that the new Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr is attempting to claw back all copies of the full, nearly 7000 page classified report that had been made available to Administration agencies such as the Department of Justice, FBI and State Department. If Burr gets his way, it would serve to shield the findings from ever being made available under the Freedom of Information Act and would also keep officials from learning lessons from this sad chapter in America’s history. Former Vice President Dick Cheney remains unrepentant, publicly stating he would do it all over again, meaning he would order that prisoners be tortured. This may very well happen given that any future Administration is free to overturn President Obama’s 2009 executive order. Our nation is built, by design and intention, entirely on laws written and enacted by citizen-politicians who were elected by fellow citizens. Its strength lies in upholding these laws, the greater the crime, the more important its prosecution.

The “Tackling Torture Video Contest,” was created to draw attention to the need for proper execution of our laws regarding torture regardless of fear, political preference, or rhetoric. Contest judge Joseph Jolton explains, “Artists have a unique opportunity to present perspectives on our culture and society that may not be evident in the media and our consciousness, or need other ways of being explored. Film offers immediacy, presence and emotion when it presents these perspectives and can have a far more effective impact than written descriptions or static images."

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: APRIL 30, 2015   FESTIVAL: SEPTEMBER 10–20, 2015

RIL 30, 2015   FESTIVAL: SEPTEMBER 10–20, 2015

The festival has been named as the “Coolest Short Film Festival” by MovieMaker Magazine, and is a three-time winner of the Washington City Paper’s “Coolest Short Film Festival” contest/award.

The 11-day event (September 10–20, 2015) will include film screenings, Q&As, filmmaker workshops and parties in locations throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area, as well as online, through the DC Shorts Online Film Festival

Founded in 2003, the DC Shorts Film Festival was created by DC-based filmmaker, Jon Gann, in response to the dozens of festivals he attended the previous year with his award-winning film, Cyberslut. Frustrated that many festivals were focused on money and sponsors and not films and filmmakers, he decided to start his own event, focusing on the form he loves — shorts.

In 2006, the DC Film Alliance, a non-profit arts organization, was created to present the DC Shorts Film Festival, and offer other programs and resources for Washington, D.C.-based filmmakers. The Alliance helped to bridge the gap between other area film organizations, foster a community for regional film festival directors, and sponsored monthly Salons to educate filmmakers of all levels.

In response to the needs of the industry, DC Shorts has recently rebranded many DC Film Alliance activities, re-tooled others, and now hosts year-round programming, which includes:

  • DC Shorts Film Festival & Screenwriting Competitions (September)
  • Online resources for regional filmmakers
  • Online films for audience development
  • DC Shorts WINS: award-winning film (February)
  • Regional Film Festival Conference (March)
  • DC Shorts MENTORS: Weekend courses on all aspects of short filmmaking (March)
  • DC Shorts LAUGHS: comedy films and live stand-up comics (January)
  • Pasties & Popcorn: sexy films and live burlesque and sideshow acts (May)
  • Internship opportunities for college-age students

12th Annual DC Shorts Film Festival
September 10-20, 2015

  • Our main judging criteria is STORY. Do you have an interesting, original story about developed, well-written characters? If so, then you are a good fit for us.
  • We screen all genres and styles of films.
  • We screen films from :30 seconds to 20 minutes. Longer films may be considered, but are generally difficult to program. We will not consider any film over 30 minutes.
  • All entrants receive written feedback from the selection panel. This information has been invaluable to thousands of past entrants – it is the reason we have been a top pick of Moviemaker Magazine year after year.
  • Films that screened at past DC Shorts Film Festivals have gone on win countless other competitions, including the Academy Awards.
  • Washington, DC has some of the most sophisticated audiences in the world. In a city with over 70 film festivals a year, DC Shorts continues to be a dominant force for film distribution in the region.
  • The DC Shorts Film Festival is the largest short film event on the east coast of the United States.
  • DC Shorts just topped the list as Moviemaker Magazine’s Coolest Short Film Festival – an honor we are thrilled about, and has been listed as a “Festival Worth the Submission Fee” — again.

9th Annual DC Shorts Screenplay Competition
Friday, September 18, 2015
Six finalists are invited to attend DC Shorts and, with the assistance of local directors and agents, cast a live table reading of the script from a bank of actors. The readings are performed in front of an audience, who vote on their favorites. These votes, along with the scores of the readers, determine a competition winner.

  • The DC Shorts Screenplay Competition awards up to $2,000 to a winning script, and guaranteed acceptance into the 2016 DC Shorts Film Festival.
  • We consider screenplays in every genre and subject matter. However, because the finalists are read in front of a live audience, the judging committee looks for material that can be successfully conveyed to a general audience in a table reading.
  • Scripts must be under 15 pages (not including a cover page).
  • Scripts must not be in production. The purpose of the competition and award money is to foster the creation and successful completion of an independent short film. All film/video shooting must take place after the award presentation.
  • DC Shorts has been named by MovieMaker Magazine year after year as one of 25 festivals worth the entry fee for our unique feedback system in which EVERY writer is able to review their scores and receive readers’ comments.
  • The 2014 script winner, BREAKIN(G) by David Feehan, is currently in production, and will premiere at the 2015 DC Shorts Film Festival. We are very proud to be one of the project’s producers.

OVERVIEW:

Winston Baker will host its annual international program during the 68th Festival de Cannes at the prestigious Carlton Hotel located on the Boulevard de la Croisette. This particular forum will be a half-day program on the afternoon of May 15, 2015 geared towards global strategies for financing films, mitigating risk, aligning interests with partners worldwide, and identifying viable distribution in the age of “watch it when you want and where you want it.”

Key topics of discussion at the forum will include:

- View From the Director’s Chair: Banking on Content vs. Talent

- Is it Real Movie Money or Just Another Big Yacht Passing By?

- Staying Ahead of the Growing Co-Production Curve

- Breaking into the China Market: Power Players and Strategic Partnership Opportunities

- Distribution Re-Defined: Selling Films and Making Money in the On-Demand Age

At the end of the forum, a private reception will be hosted for speakers, sponsors, and registered attendees.

ATTENDEE PROFILE:

Each year, the Cannes forum hosts a targeted group of between 150 and 200 film financiers, producers, sales agents, buyers, and seasoned advisors. The Winston Baker forum is an effective way to stay connected with award winning producers and active industry deal-makers, as well as make new contacts at a film festival that hosts thousands of people each year.

In 2014, attendance at the Marché du Film reached a record 11,806 registered participants, including 1,927 buyers for 5,036 companies. 116 countries were represented that year, with 8 new countries making an appearance. In such a huge market, there is no better way to establish visibility with the right contacts than by attending a high-level film finance and distribution conference?

Winston Baker’s 2015 Cannes forum will be featuring outstanding speakers such as David Glasser, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Weinstein Company, Jim Berk, Chief Executive Officer of Participant Media, Micah Green, Co-Head, Film Finance and Sales Group, Creative Artists Agency and industry leaders from IM Global, Universal Pictures International, IFC Films, and so many others!

The bfmiff2015 12th Edition is to return to London after an absence of 4 years. The festival will take place from the 2ndtothe5thJuly2015 at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre (BGAC).

On July 2nd the bfmiff2015 will open with the documentary “LookingforLove” by pioneer film director/producer and bfmiff2015 festival Founder Menelik Shabazz

The bfmiff2015 has been instrumental in establishing a platform for UK black filmmakers to present their work and for audiences to engage with this work alongside international films drawn from the USA, Europe, Africa, Caribbean, and South America.

bfmiff2015 will continue with this range with a strong line-up of films to include features, documentaries and animation alongside industry led workshops and seminars. The bfm festival, which started in 1999/98 is the longest running black independent film festival in the UK.

Menelik said

“I am proud to present the 12th Edition of the bfm International Film Festival this year.  We continue to give audiences the best in black world cinema as well as being a platform for film & TV industry seminars and workshops. The black independent sector has long been starved of opportunities to engage with industry as well as to present their work. The festival will/has become the gateway for such engagement”

On 23rd May 2015 the BFI will host a screening of “LookingforLove”.

For more information on the bfmiff2015 schedule visit www.bfmmedia.com.  Festival updates will be on the website soon. Follow: #bfmiff or http:///www.facebook.com/bfmiff

bfmiff2015 is looking for sponsorship and partnerships. Previous support has come from Film London, the BBC, The Independent, BFI and The American Embassy.

February 1st is the first day of submissions for the 2015 New Urbanism Film Festival.

The 2015 New Urbanism Film Festival will be held in Los Angeles during the month of October.  Submissions can be short or feature length films on the topics of urban planning, architecture, street art, public transit, economic development, walkability, tactical urbanism, urban farming or any emerging idea in your city.

Deadline for submissions is July 31st.  But enter early to take advantage of reduced fees. In fact, during the month of February, short films under 5 minutes can be submitted free of charge!

The 2014 festival received over 100 films from 17 different countries.  All of which presented ideas and concepts for how cities are changing, adapting, and growing, to be more human, friendly, dignifying, and catered to the human experience.

This is the third year of for the festival and found Josh Paget says that he is confident even more ideas will emerge. “We’ve found that movies can excite conversations among people better than a book, articles or a lecture.  I want to find the modern day movie version of Life and Death of Great American Cities. Don’t you want to see that?”

If such a movie is in the works, you’ll wind up seeing it at New Urbanism Film Festival in Los Angeles, October 2015.

If you are making that movie. You better submit it by July 31st!

April 30, 2015 Earlybird Deadline

Feedback: The one element most festivals ignore.

Instead of paying submission fees and getting nothing in return, EVERYONE who submits to DOFIFF.COM will receive one of two benefits: Either 1): your film is already competition calibre, and gets accepted/nominated to compete, OR 2): you will receive a letter outlining exactly what is keeping it from being accepted.  If you can make corrections, you can resubmit for FREE.  Find us at https://filmfreeway.com/festival/DepthOfFieldInternationalFilmFestival and get your money’s worth.
