New: calling for projects for S-3D movies, AR/VR contents and videogames!

The 3D Content Financing Market (3DFM) is an international co-production and financing market fully dedicated to projects for stereoscopic-3D (S-3D) contents. It brings together (1) producers with new projects for S-3D contents and looking for financing, and (2) financiers and co-producers looking for investment opportunities. Initiated in 2011, 3DFM is the only such market in the world. It is now in its 5th edition.

3DFM will take place on 14-15 Dec 2015 at the Théâtre de Liège, Belgium, as part of 3D Stereo MEDIA, the International 3D Summit for Science, Technology, Art and Business (www.3dstereomedia.eu). As in previous years, 3DFM is organized in collaboration with peacefulfish.

We are looking for projects for S-3D contents (movies/films, virtual/augmented reality and videogames) that have, at a minimum, a first-cut preliminary script, a significant international sales potential, and - for movies only - a budget of at least 500,000. These projects are eligible for at least a poster presentation/pitch. Projects that additionally have a complete preliminary script and at least 50% percent of the financing secured are eligible for an oral presentation/pitch. The projects can be submitted by experienced S-3D producers, experienced 2D producers who would like to make the transition to S-3D, or persons with a demonstrated artistic ability.

3DFM also features other activities, such as a workshop on the financing and marketing of S-3D contents/movies, case studies in  S-3D content making, the coaching of the oral pitchers, a networking reception, and visits of local (co-)production houses.

All information about 3DFM can be found at www.3dstereomedia.eu/market including this Call for projects, the Regulations, and the Submission form. Although the Regulations provide answers to most of the questions you may have, do not hesitate to contact us if you have additional questions.

The Submission form and all required elements must be sent per email no later than 15 September 2015.

Film4 FrightFest 2015 announces opening and closing films

The 16th edition of Film4 FrightFest kicks off in skin-crawling fashion with the European premiere of David Keating’s blood-freezing rural nightmare CHERRY TREE, starring Anna Walton (Hellboy 2, Soulmate) and rising star Naomi Battrick (Down Dog, Waterloo Road)

Keating, who directed the acclaimed ‘Wake Wood’ for the revamped Hammer label, offers another provocative and compelling twist on the pagan cult chiller, in which a young girl, Faith (Naomi Battrick), in an attempt to save her father’s life, makes a fateful pact with Sissy Young (Anna Walton) head of a sinister black magic coven.

FrightFest’s first Irish event-opener, CHERRY TREE is a Fantastic Films & House of Netherhorror Production, produced by John McDonnell & Brendan McCarthy.

Closing Film4 FrightFest is the European premiere of the stunning anthology TALES OF HALLOWEEN, a celebration of the spooky October holiday. Ten tales of terror unfold in a sleepy American suburb on All Hallows Eve as ghouls, imps, aliens, goblins, demons, axe murderers and serial killers roam the witching hour. This anthology of power nightmares is directed by the cream of the scream industry crop: Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, Axelle Carolyn, Adam Gierasch, Lucky McKee, Dave Parker, Paul Solet, Ryan Schifrin, John Skipp & Mike Mendez.

TALES OF HALLOWEEN is created by Axelle Carolyn and produced by Patrick Ewald, Shaked Berenson, Mike Mendez and Axelle Carolyn.

The guest line-up will be announced later but both films will be represented by cast and crew.

Alan Jones said today:  We have never opened with an Irish production before. So we figured it was about time to put a sharp focus on all the sterling work the Irish Film Board has done to promote the genre. Over the years we have premiered DEAD MEAT, ISOLATION, DOROTHY MILLS, DARK TOUCH and THE CANAL, and CHERRY TREE follows in their fine tradition offering storytelling excellence, great production values and terrific casting, slathered with that appealing Emerald Isle quirkiness. The choice for our Closing night film was a no-brainer, Not only is TALES OF HALLOWEEN an absolutely terrific celebration of the October holiday, it also represents a potted history of FrightFest’s shining past due to much of the talent involved both on screen and behind it being our special guests over the last fifteen years. So sit back and enjoy!”

The full-line up will be announced on Thurs 2 July

This year’s event takes place at the Vue Cinema, Leicester Sq between Thurs Aug 27 & Mon Aug 31. Festival and day pass sales will go on sale Sat July 4 at 10.00am and will only be available online. Single tickets will go on sale on July 25. Full booking details will be announced on Thurs 2 July.

Get on board for surfing movies with Wavescape Surf Film Festival

To mark a decade of bringing the best surfing films to Durban, the Wavescape Surf Film Festival has announced a record lineup of 23 movies over a week at the 36th Durban International Film Festival, which takes place from July 16 to 26.

Every conceivable film technique and technology is represented in an extraordinary selection of films, according to Spike from Wavescape, co-director of the Wavescape festival. “We have some excellent documentaries, including the hair-raising story of the Signal Hill Speed Run in California that started downhill skateboard racing.”

Wavescape 2015 boasts 12 short films and 11 medium or feature length movies that reflect a unique diversity. A unique trilogy of poetic shorts form a beautiful rendition of surfing in the UK: Sea Fever - and Irish film set to a John Masefield poem and gritty black and white footage; Edges of Sanity - a uniquely powerful piece narrated by Charles Dance who plays Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones; and Chasing Rumours - moving from the clamour of a football match at Newcastle United to the nearby Tyne River where storm waves pound grimy shores.

Included are films from the most remote wildernesses of Alaska (Arctic Swell) and the Arctic Circle (The Cradle of Storms). But from these frozen wastelands and frigid waves we sweep to the translucent tropical waters and reefs of Indonesia in the Mentawai Drone Movie, a short shot entirely by aerial drone.

“Don’t miss the languidly beautiful pace of Bella Vita that takes us to Tuscany as an Italian surfer and activist retraces his ancient roots, or the hard-hitting feminist film Flux: Redefining Women's Surfing that ask serious questions of the surf industry.”

"One of my favourite shorts is Narcose, an artistically rendered account of world apnea free diving champion Guillaume Néry's hallucinations caused by 'raptures of the deep' during one of his dives," says Spike.

There are films about skateboarding in the urban precincts of Cape Town, and keeping within themes of sustainability, two South African shorts about wooden surfboard craftsman. From the epic surfing and slo-mo definition of worldclass surfing in Attractive Distractions, we move to Always on the Road, a beautifully shot film that traces the old surf routes of Europe along the Basque countryside, as well as France and Portugal.

There are obligatory soul surfing movies (I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night, Missing, Rail to Rail and Se7en Signs) to a heady mix of high action surfing that can be found in Missing, Attractive Distractions, Strange Rumblings in Shangri La and Pipeline and Kelly Slater.

And with any selection of surf films, there is the whacky wildcard: Expencive Porno Movie (sic) spoofs the "surf porn” genre, of endless shots of waves and wave-riding, with a cheesy 1960's Austin Powers theme. The widest collection yet hails from locations such as Namibia, Cape Town, Hawaii, California, Indonesia, Portugal, Spain, Alaska, Patagonia, and Australia.

The free outdoor screening at the Bay of Plenty takes place Sunday 19 July. Ster Kinekor Musgrave screenings are from from Monday, 20 July to Saturday, 25 July.

As Official ‘Festival-Time’ Partner and ‘Supporting’ Sponsor of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen today announced that submissions are now open for the highly anticipated fourth annual IWC Filmmaker Award, to be presented on 10 December in Dubai.

The winning filmmaker will receive a grant of USD 100,000 to help them bring their ideas to life on screen. This collaboration reinforces IWC’s global commitment to promoting the film industry and supporting the most promising young and up-and-coming talent in cinema. Karoline Huber, Brand Director IWC Middle East & India, is delighted with the ongoing collaboration: “IWC is proud to be partners with the DIFF for the fifth consecutive year; this is our fourth Filmmaker Award and it is a great honour to be contributing to films in the Gulf. IWC Schaffhausen has beautiful stories to tell and the directors in this region have even more.”

Entries for the fourth IWC Filmmaker Award can be submitted online at www.dubaifilmfest.com from now until 1 August 2015. Three submissions will be shortlisted by an independent jury in October 2015, and IWC Schaffhausen will present the award to the winner at the annual “For the Love of Cinema” dinner during the 12th Dubai International Film Festival, which will be held from 9 to 16 December 2015.

DIFF Chairman and Member of the IWC Filmmakers Jury Abdulhamid Juma is extremely proud of the partnership with IWC: “To have reached a stage where films are being picked up for distribution and theatrical release is incredibly exciting and will help find new audiences around the world while enriching film culture in the region. We look forward to working with IWC to further build upon this valuable collaboration in the coming years.”

During the 11th DIFF last year, Golden Globe winner and IWC Schaffhausen brand ambassador Emily Blunt presented the IWC Filmmaker Award to Abdullah Boushahri for his film “The Water”. At the same event, Emirati filmmaker Waleed Al Shehhi – who received the IWC Filmmaker Award in 2013 from Head of the IWC Filmmakers Jury and IWC brand ambassador Cate Blanchett – premiered his feature film “Dolphins” to a sold-out audience.

Following the world premiere, Dubai-based exhibitor and distributor VOX, which operates cinemas in the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Lebanon, picked up Al Shehhi’s debut feature and will release it in the Gulf later this month.

THE ARDENNES BY ROBIN PRONT TO OPEN THE 42ND FILM FEST GENT

The 42nd edition of Film Fest Gent will open on Tuesday October 13th with Robin Pront’s debut film ‘The Ardennes’ starring Kevin Janssens, Jeroen Perceval and Veerle Baetens.

Synopsis: A brutal home jacking goes hopelessly wrong. Dave, one of the two robbers, manages to run off, leaving his brother Kenneth behind. Four years later Kenneth is released from prison but a lot has changed over time. Dave has his life back on track and is trying to help Kenneth wherever possible, but is witnessing how his highly-strung brother tries to win back his ex-girlfriend Sylvie.

Next to Veerle Baetens (‘Broken Circle Breakdown’), Kevin Janssens (‘Missing Persons Unit’) and co-writer Jeroen Perceval (‘Bullhead’), the supporting actors are Jan Bijvoet (‘Borgman), Sam Louwyck (‘The Wonders’), Viviane De Muynck (‘Racing Hearts’) and Peter Van den Begin (‘Kebab Royal’).

Director Robin Pront: "As a young filmmaker I couldn’t imagine a better start for my first feature film. To open Film Fest Gent is the greatest honour you can achieve with your film in Belgium. Needless to say I’m very pleased with this opportunity. Another perk is that after several unsuccessful attempts, I will now finally get to attend the opening night of the film festival ;-) !"

Artistic director of Film Fest Gent, Patrick Duynslaegher on choosing ‘The Ardennes’ as the opening film: “We are delighted to open the 42nd edition of Film Fest Gent with ‘The Ardennes’. It’s a film festival’s duty to spot and showcase new talent. Which is certainly the case with Robin Pront, whose first feature film is a hole in one. It’s an amazing and, especially for Flanders, a rather unique mix of genre and arthouse cinema. This dark thriller is an uncut Flemish noir, not suitable for viewers who can’t take a little bloodshed, but highly recommended for anyone who wants to see a purebred filmmaker at work and enjoy the remarkable performances by Veerle Baetens, Kevin Janssens and Jeroen Perceval."

‘The Ardennes’ was produced by Bart Van Langendonck for Savage Film, co-produced by Eyeworks and PRPL/Bastide Films in the Netherlands and will be distributed in Belgium by Kinepolis Film Distribution (KFD). The film will be released nationally on October 14th 2015.

The 42nd Film Fest Gent runs from 13 to 24 October at Kinepolis Ghent, Studio Skoop, Sphinx, Vooruit, KASKcinema, Music Centre Bijloke and Kuipke.

RACING ARAB CHICKS AND BOUNDARY BREAKERS HIT ARAB FILM FESTIVAL

The 12th annual Arab Film Festival Australia returns in 2015 boasting a melting pot of films from around the Arab world. The Festival will open in Sydney on Thursday 13 -16 August, Melbourne on Friday 21 - 23 August, and Canberra on Friday 28 - 30 August and will present six feature films and four short films.

From a small Lebanese coastal village, to the racetracks of Palestine, to the iconic backdrop of the Arabian dessert, the Festival gives audiences the best of contemporary Arab films. Whilst conflict and instability continue to be the dominant representation of the Arab world, the filmmakers are uncovering rich and rare stories and capturing them in unique ways.

“Arab filmmakers are reflecting exciting and sometimes volatile times, and through cinema they are making powerful statements, challenging stereotypes, and creating conversations about the future they dream for” says Festival Co-Director, Mouna Zaylah. We’re proud to showcase the diversity of the region with films from Jordan, Iraq, UAE, Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon.

Festival Co-DirectorFadia Abboud is particularly looking forward to audience reactions to this year’s line-up. “In 2015 the Festival explores taboos from small towns to big cities: Arab chicks’ car racing in the West Bank; Arab boys taking a road-trip partying across borders and check-points. There’s a theme of pushing boundaries both physically and ideologically”.

Simon Boswell at Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival 2015

With much joy we announce the arrival of film score composer Simon Boswell to this year's Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival where we will together celebrate 30 years of his work in cinema. The festival starts on Tuesday, July 14th and will last until Satrurday, July 18th.

Simon Boswell (born in London in 1956) has left an indelible mark on horror genre through numerous memorable and now-classical scores from the 1980s and 1990s in which he combined electronic elements with orchestral instruments.

He was an accomplished musician by the time he started his film career in 1985, when several of his themes were used in Dario Argento's Phenomena. This led to his first composer credit, for Argento-produced Demons 2 (1986) directed by Lamberto Bava; he did several more scores for Bava Jr. and other Italian horror directors, most notably for Michele Soavi's debut Stage Fright (1987).
His wonderful scores added grandeur and beauty to visionary works of several auteurs known for their unique style, like Alejandro Jodorowsky (Santa Sangre, 1989), Clive Barker (Lord Of Illusions, 1995), Álex de la Iglesia (Perdita Durango, 1997) and Juraj Jakubisko (Bathory: Countess of Blood, 2008).
A special part of Boswell's career is linked with the director Richard Stanley: his haunting, melodic tunes have become inextricable from this director's films Hardware (1990) and Dust Devil (1992), but they also add the mystical mood to all of Stanley's documentaries, too.
This composer is not devoted only to horror and fantastique: he contributed remarkable scores for Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave, and also for Hackers, Photographing Fairies, A Midsummer Night's Dream and dozens of others.

In 2015 Simon Boswell celebrates 30 years of his work in cinema: a perfect timing to reunite him with his long-time inspirator, Richard Stanley, and greet them both on Grossmann! Besides a special retrospective, there will also be a master class, moderated by Serbian writer and critic Dejan Ognjanović who has also contributed an in-depth article on Boswell for our website and program booklet which was used in this article.

The Cannes Sketch, by Nesta Morgan

This year’s Cannes sketches took off with the European Audiovisual Observatory, where the panelists discussed A Fistful of Euros and The Future of Film Financing in Europe.

A Fistful of Euros, and The Crowd Funders 16.05.2015 by Nesta Morgan

I envisioned the creative inability to access finance markets, the digging of consumer trenches with no fiscal incentives where the players in the common landscape seemed to evolve from crowd funders. People participating in works of art is important to the health of society, and intellectual property rights is important to a 60 billion euro loan in a Juncker plan package, we need an eco system of financing, a sweet tax and a Market share.

Todd Haynes film “Carol” was the next sketch at the UK Film Centre, with Killer and Number 9 Films, Women in film and a happy ending.
Then off to the Variety and UN Women #HeForShe sketch as they took to the stage in discussing Gender Equality within the Film industry,  how cinema undermines intention and is a powerful economic force, it’s pedigree, like Polo, and we all need to think (in relation to the equality of women) beyond the word f…  as a male role was quoted as having said in studio “you could bottle the dried up eggs here!” - one lady on the panel said, we should be grateful for gay men, without them it could be even worse! This was an entertaining talk with leading ladies Elizabeth Nyamayaro for the UN, actress/producer Salma Hayek, Parker Posey, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and “Carol” filmmakers Christine Vachon and Elizabeth Karlsen with Variety’s own Michelle Sobrino and Claudia Eller leading a heartfelt discussion on our role in the industry (sponsored by watchmakers Frederique Constant’s gift to charity of a beautiful timepiece for ladies).

Variety and UN Women's HeForShe 16.05.15, sketch by Nesta

Elizabeth Nyamayaro (UN), actress/producer Salma Hayek, Parker Posey, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and “Carol” producers and filmmakers Christine Vachon & Elizabeth Karlsen with Variety’s own Michelle Sobrino (publisher) and Claudia Eller (co-editor-in-chief).

Jordan Screen Advantage, Producing Without Borders sketch with the Producers Guild of America was a fast and entertaining talk by gentlemen leaders in the film world as Craig Emanuel talked as an attorney with passion, Antoine de Cazotte, a living breathing animal and Gareth Wiley claimed to cry at breaking a cookie.

The Brooklyn Talent Talk at the UK Film Centre saw Susan Mullen, Wendy Mitchell of The British Council and Screen International, Fiona Dwyer and Pierre Even talking great stories with great characters and like minded people with tales of Harvey Weinstein calling at 3am in the morning, the involvement of 13 financial partners and the best cotton sheets at a hotel all being a natural fit to the production.

Brooklyn at the UK Film Centre, 17.05.15 Sketch by Nesta
Susan Mullen, Wendy Mitchell (British Council and Screen International), Fiona Dwyer and Pierre Even - the Irish film board and Telefilm Cananda sharing great stories with great characters and like minded people!

Next sketch was Animaze and Horyou, who asked if Animation would change our world, so picturing some natural Spanish kids play (drawing child Picassos), a culture conception ideology with Laurie and Bruno dining in a theatre sharing a couple of movies with tapas “spanish style” and Peanuts in a glass box, we capture the children’s minds, and hope animation can save the world!

Animaze and Horyou at Cannes Film Festival, 18.05.15 Sketch by Nesta

Laurie Gordon (Animaze festival) and Bruno Chatelin indulge in a spanish style movie session with tapas Peanuts and capture the children's minds!

A sketch at The Talent Talk with Steve McQueen: The Mans and Le Mans presented a film by Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna put together with 600 boxes of film and a long road of editorial!

The Mans and Le Mans, 18.05.15 sketch by Nesta

Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna talk to Damon Wise on the journey to make their movie and the 600 boxes of film on the way there.

A Pixar animation and Dreamworks sketch outlined that creativity is not linear, suggesting the walls of film footage are measured as animated walls per square foot to create the animated landscape.

London is Business, at UK Film Centre, Cannes, 18.05.15 sketch by Nesta

Clare Stewart (BFI), Liz Rosenthal (Power to the PIxel), Adrian Wootton (CEO Film London BFC) -The Three Tips and Strategy!

London is Business sketch with Clare Stewart, Liz Rosenthal and Adrian Wootton offered the 3 Tips and Strategy to film making, the talk was followed by The Production Finance Market and The International market where Ian Hutchinson declared his objective was to get control primarily, Angus Finney declared one might need a certain amount of fertilisation (recall the UN Variety sketch, perhaps gentlemen should bottle those eggs!), Emma Slade talked the One Stop with general knowledge and principal, and Alice de Sousa stated to be in film is to be fortunate, that it was terrifying but you need to practice pitching.

The Production Finance Market, Cannes, 18.05.15 sketch by Nesta

Ian Hutchinson, Angus Finney, Emma Slade, Alice de Sousa.

The Coutts annual Boules tournament was a sporting pitch distraction, I was happy to picture both Rene and Gerard, the french umpires of the game in full stride amongst the melange of producers en scene.
Women Achieving in Film, Cannes 19.05.15, sketch by Nesta
HP: Helen O'Hara, Kylie Flavell, Susie Wilson, Komal Minhas, Grace McPhilipps, Kate Perotti.

HP Cutting Edge Collaborators sketch: Women achieving in film declared stories from men and women equal live action! with panelists going live on periscope, camera backpackers with heatstroke, sun dancer dream girls stripping resources from you porcupines - not the hollywood model but gypsy style; and a scary note to end on, punk mums in cinema. Chose your mentor, we are the wave!

The sketch was followed by the Scottish Talent development with Initialize Film’s Ian Davies, Paul Welsh, Eddie Dick and Eva Riley, figureheads of Scottish production dripping with creative solutions and a top warm up to the Scottish Whisky tasting event, Auchentoshan style.
Next Pavilion, Cannes 20.05.15, sketch by Nesta

Stage 32 Amanda Toney and Richard Botto
I characterised Stage 32 at the Next Pavillion as the Social Safe for filmmakers with placards to donate a location, an actor, another charity crowd, nature beauty buffs and some vegan vegers for promotion on Air Wave platforms, Air Wave exchange, Advertisement free, and an educational discount. One must identify a list of thanks, tangerine dream intangibles, honour flight, selfless content, gravity, and networking tips such as firstly Meet and ask 3 things of your maker, drop the shoulders, crowd source, get gear heads, get fancies and sell out! to i tunes, charts, with passions and tangerines to close the circle social media, a 50% honing craft for Social Platform Sales, donate and take a social dive! and remember to keep a focus list.

The "Shorts" Pitch, Cannes 21.05.15, sketch by Nesta

3 minutes, 1 Shot, now Pitch! Visualise the Gold, you can only do it once. Carter Pilcher, Ken Carlson, Elizabeth Brown (Bird Flight Films)

The UK Film Centre 3 minute Pitch: One Shot Now Pitch! Award went to Salvation with a £5000 cheque, and a tag line ‘Visualise the Gold, you can only do it once!”

Onto A Fashion Sketch of Zeina Nabulsi who is is a stylist in general inspired by Elie Saab, flowers and pastels, weather, Grace Kelly, Nicole Kidman, the polka dot concealing figures, and capable of furnishing a closet in the Majestic Hotel like a clothing treasure trove.
I went to see the Fourth Direction, Chauthi Koot and The Son of Saul to reimagine the cinema, and closed with a John C Reilly and Alison Dickey sketch, calling this Cannes “La Glace at le Ciel”.
