Stanley Tucci and cast talk The Final Portrait

by Martin I. Petrov

Many years after his last film and having starred in numerous other titles, Stanley Tucci returns behind the camera with Final Portrait, a period biopic drama that follows the last few years of the life of Swiss-Italian painter Alberto Giacometti. Geoffrey Rush stars as the famous painter alongside Clémence Poésy as his prostitute mistress and Armie Hammer as an American writer who becomes Giacometti’s obsession for the perfect portrait, which was also the last he completed.

In the official press conference, Stanley Tucci underlined he feels more secure and a bit more experienced now and this gave him a better understanding of the pace and the rhythm while doing the film. Working with a talented DoP helped I'm imagine the film in the best possible way and keep it as naturalistic as possible, considering it a period drama set in Paris.

Tucci, when asked why he decided to focus on the last few years of Giacometti’s life, commented that biopics can sometimes be quite “expositional and you can't explore the entire life of a person. In the film we show 18 days of the artist’s life but there is quite a lot of background to his personal life.”

Armie Hammer who plays Giacometti’s subject for the final portrait referred to how smooth his collaboration with Stanley Tucci was, because “when the director is an actor too he knows what his actors want and this makes it much easier.” Also, he continued “we used mostly handled cameras and the set was almost empty and free which felt quite liberating.”

Geoffrey Rush arrived from Prague where he is filming at the moment for the evening premiere of the film, where he was also awarded with the festival’s camera award for his contribution. Concluding the press conference, Stanley Tucci said humorously “…of course Geoffrey didn't stay in character. That's would've been a waste of time.”

Samantha, Guille, Ana and Cristian all have something in common – and yet they couldn’t be more diverse. Their bodies are different to those of other people; be it the mouth, the left side of the face, the texture of the skin or the feeling that your legs don’t belong to your body. They all live and love hidden away in strangely artificial interiors. As ‘freaks’, they rarely go out onto the street. A confrontation with the rest of the world could have fatal consequences. Director Eduardo Casanova’s strictly symmetrical, pink and purple world is populated by ‘deformed’ people that include the fat, the small, and a woman born without eyes who works as a sex worker.
Spanish director Casanova’s episodic feature-length debut is an extension of his previous shorts. Making use of deliberately artificial images he explores the lives of those who, living on the margins of society, are rarely granted places in which they feel secure. However, their situation is not as hopeless as it at first seems, and beauty is a term that is redefined at least once during the course of the film.

Q&A-Red_Rock_Film_Festival_2015
MISSION & OBJECTIVE
To encourage the production of media in both the independent and professional market that portray the human race in a positive light, and to applaud original works that redefine media through innovation, creativity and sensitivity that both enlightens and educates audiences from around the world.

INTRODUCTION
The festival considers entries of ALL GENRES from shorts to full-length features, and is held in Southern Utah, nearby Zion National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument. The location is ideal for the vacation-seeking filmmaker. It is an artist's retreat for film, cuisine, parties, and workshops with approachable professional people. This emerging festival is held each November in Festival City.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The International Red Rock Film Festival. The Red Rock Film Festival was formed in 2007 in Southern Utah, and quickly became a internationally recognized festival with 6,000 attendees in 2008. It made MovieMaker Magazine's list of "Top Festivals Worth the Entry Fee" in both 2009 and 2013.

DEMOCRATIC FILM SELECTION
All films are watched by a previewing committee and scored in Directing, Screenplay, Acting/Talent, Production Values and Post-Production Values. Local or international, friend or stranger, pretty or funky, famous or not: all films are given equal treatment and go through the same democratic film selection.

DEMOGRAPHIC
The demographic is well educated, consisting mostly of empty-nesters, college students and seniors. Other festivals that have accepted more than two of our films have been SXSW, Sundance, Austin Film Festival, Chicago International Movies and Music Festival, Cinequest, Cucalorus Film Festival, Darklight, Florida Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Galway Film Festival, Mammoth Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival, Reel Rock Film Tour, SIGGRAPH, Sedona International Film Festival, True/False Film Festival, and others.

GENRE
All genres are considered. Although documentaries have been a predominate focus at the Red Rock Film Festival, festival audience often compliment the variety and diversity of films selected for the festival in Utah. Animation, arts, children, comedy, documentary, drama, experimental, fiction, narrative, romance, sports, student, horror, suspense, mystery, musical, music videos, war themes, women's issues, family, and humanitarian films are all taken into consideration. Cultural diversity is also a highlight at the festival; American, Indian, African, Islander, European, Asian, Latino, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Spiritual, Yogi, Hindu, and other philosophical, governmental, historical, and artistic cultures are to be explored.

COMPETITION:
All genres are considered including animation, documentary, experimental, fiction, music video and student-made films. The festival has several categories of competition, including unique subcategories of featurette and short-short.
The Program Directors may also select additional categories at their own discretion, depending on how many qualified entries are received.

ALL FILM DESERVES A HOME
One common question we ask when previewing films is "where do we place them?" We expect some films would be great to release to the theaters, others for television, some for the classroom, for our film series. Of course, we also look for films that would make a great premiere at our festival. To encourage the independent spirit, Red Rock strives to find a home for all films that qualify in competition. This gives the filmmaker a chance to give their work exposure even if they may not make the festival finals. The festival also hosts a mini-film market, special screenings throughout the year plus makes recommendations to other festivals.

FILM MARKET
The Red Film Market is a small section at the festival where filmmakers and other industry professionals can view films on their own in the festival library or in special industry screenings given to select finalists and other favorites from the festival.

Glendale International Film Festival Call for Entries

October 12 - October 22, 2017 10 Days! This is the fourth year of the exciting national and international film festival in the beautiful City of Glendale, California. Our wonderful venues are the PACIFIC THEATRES GLENDALE at the AMERICANA as well as many other locations!

This year's festival is once again dedicated to All Creatures Great and Small in the Animal Kingdom (especially cats, dogs and horses!) as well as Women Film Makers and Screenwriters! We are also dedicated to creating film making classes and screenwriting classes in the Glendale schools. We are now a non-profit 501(3)(c) and 20% of our proceeds will go to the Glendale schools as an endowment to create film making classes and screenwriting classes for all.

We seek the highest quality films and screenplays. No matter what the story is, it should be told with original words and characters to express the point of the story. It is the stories we want to see and hear about in an original and fresh format with truly unique characters and plots.

Four Screenplay Reading Contests! One for short screenplays (20 pages and under), one for full length feature screenplays (under 200 pages), one for television scripts and one for stage plays. The screenplays are read by professional actors and the selected readings and winners are decided by our judges prior to the readings. A scene from your screenplay (up to 10 pages) will be read in front of a live audience.

Films have the power to transform perspectives. They have been the staple of our cultural identity on both a national and international level. However, many people do not recognize the arduous labor that is involved throughout all departments within film. Our local community of Glendale harbors some of the greatest talented minds that have strayed from conventional systems to create their works. Their passions can be felt through the screened, and it something that should be shared among an audience. Apart from watching the films countless times within an editing room or an office, nothing topples the majesty of watching works projected on a gigantic silverscreen within the solitude of a cinema. The reactions spawned from audience viewers takes the experience even further.

Our mission is to give the opportunity for the filmmakers and screenwriters to showcase their works as well as giving the audience unique experience in watching films that are not of the normal venue. In essence, films you might not see anywhere else.

We have witnessed how our event has benefited the local theatre businesses and restaurants of Glendale. We were met with praise for our delivery, and we plan to do it again for the love of film making.

Panel discussions, networking parties and breakfasts, dinners and good times (lots of parties and fun!) This is where you can meet with your film making friends from around the world, expand your contacts and have great screenings of your work in very elegant surroundings during this 10 day festival.

We have many special awards categories. A spotlight category for Women Film Makers and Screenwriters as well as our special awards for film makers residing in the Glendale/Burbank/Los Angeles/Pasadena areas. International, national and local films are invited as well as web series, short shorts, animation and student films. We are especially looking for films with a scientific bent, environmental and action films with a message! Comedy, drama, sci-fi are all welcome, especially any film, short or screenplay with an unusual idea that has to do with science, research, technology or any other unusual avant garde idea.

Each film/screenplay that is submitted is watched and read from beginning to end by our programmers and judges, so you know you will receive proper consideration of your creative work.

Lies we Tell Review: "The only men who get caught are those who don’t love their wives enough"

LIES WE TELL by Mitu Misra; Review by Moira Sullivan
In British-Indian director Mitu Misra’s debut film Lies We Tell men and women tell lies: men tell lies to their wives, to their mistresses, to each other, and to their children. Women tell lies to themselves, and perpetuate their entrapment as young girls sold by their fathers and families through marriage. These practices continue in Britain where Muslim Pakistani subcultures are in collision with the dominant culture and characterized by street violence, family feud...

Samantha, Guille, Ana and Cristian all have something in common – and yet they couldn’t be more diverse. They all live and love hidden away in strangely artificial interiors. As ‘freaks’, they rarely go...

Digital Cinema at the 2017 Berlinale

$

In the last few years, the films shown at the Berlin International Film Festival have increasingly been delivered and screened in digital formats. That trend continues in 2017 – almost all of the more than 2,500 screenings at the Berlinale and the European Film Market will originate from Digital Cinema Packages (DCP).

The Berlinale occupies a unique and innovative position compared to film festivals worldwide at this digital cinema frontier, which would not be possible without a modern, temporary infrastructure enabled by IT and cinema technology companies. ARRI, Colt Technology Services, Dell EMC, Dolby, Aspera - an IBM company and Barco, as well as Rohde & Schwarz together form a well-rehearsed team of partners who support the Berlinale with digital cinema products and services that are essential to realising the festival.

Telecommunications company Colt Technology Services provides the fibre optic network and collocation services at its Berlin data centre; from there the DCP files are sent to the festival’s more than 60 screens. The Berlinale network now has a total bandwidth of more than 100 gigabits per second, which is used during the festival to transfer a total of approximately one petabyte of data. For the first time this year, the software-defined networking is implemented into the system, allowing flexible adjustments of transmission bandwidths to respond to demand.

That enormous volume of data is stored on a cluster of six Isilon storage systems by Dell EMC, making it easily accessible and fully redundant. The more than 1,000 DCP copies reside on 550 terabytes of storage distributed across more than 200 hard drives.

Since 2002, ARRI has been responsible for the creation and processing of the beloved Berlinale trailer in all its versions and formats; the trailer will be shown in a 4K, high frame rate format.

Dolby provides the Berlinale with sound equipment, digital cinema servers and technical support. Since 2015, the Berlinale Palast has been equipped with the Dolby ATMOS immersive audio technology. And for the first time this year, the Berlinale will be using Dolby’s Fidelio wireless audio system to make selected screenings accessible to the hearing and /or visually impaired.

Aspera – an IBM company will once again provide the Faspex software to allow high-speed data transfer from distributors and production companies all over the world to the Berlinale servers at Colt's data centre. Thanks to the ten gigabits per second Internet connection at the Colt facility, the DCP for a feature length film can be transferred in about 30 minutes. More and more production companies make use of network-based, encrypted film delivery, sparing themselves and the festival having to deal with tapes or hard drives.

As some productions do not deliver their films as DCPs, but as video tapes or files the Berlinale relies on the proven technology of post-production company Rohde & Schwarz to screen those films.  The Berlinale Film Office team uses the encoding system R&S Venice, R&S SpycerBox and R&S CLIPSTER® to quickly and securely convert the various formats into encrypted DCP files.

And once again, the manufacturer of DCI-certified projectors, Barco will be supporting the Berlinale with five DLP projectors from its DP4K-32B and DP4K-23B series. Those 4K projectors will be used in the Berlinale Palast and the Friedrichstadt-Palast, among other venues, to deliver crystal-clear, high-quality pictures to screens as wide as 22 metres.

Berlin Under the Sign of the Bear – 250 0000 Tickets sold for the Berlinale 2017 so far

Audience crowds at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival have once again been overwhelming. Halfway through the festival, again more than 250,000 tickets have been sold.

“We’re very happy that the Berlinale has drawn so many people into cinemas again this year. The passion for film shown by curious audiences who spend eleven days on a cinematic voyage of discovery, is really impressive. And the response to the new  EFM initiatives and events is extremely positive”, says Festival Director Dieter Kosslik.

The Open House programme at the Audi Berlinale Lounge gives the public an additional opportunity to experience the festival up-close and personal and see Berlinale guests in the flesh. Open events are held there every day, such as talks with celebrity filmmakers, discussions, and lounge nights with a DJ or live music.

The 2017 European Film Market (EFM) has drawn more participants than last year (9,640). The popular “EFM Industry Debates” segment celebrated its ten-year anniversary this weekend. This year, Gropius Park also played host for the first time to the “Berlinale Africa Hub”, a platform for innovative projects and ideas from the African film industry.

Over at Berlinale Talents, Jury President Paul Verhoeven and juror of the International Jury Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as the artist Christo, have been among the distinguished guests at the panel discussions. The coming days will see more exciting events, with Agnieszka Holland, Isabel Coixet, Sally Potter, David OReilly, Raoul Peck and juror Olafur Eliasson on the programme.

The Berlinale Publikumstag on Sunday, February 19, 2017, provides an encore chance for audiences. That day, numerous festival films from various sections will have repeat screenings at the Berlinale venues.

INTERNATIONAL URANIUM FILM FESTIVAL - THE ATOMIC AGE CINEMA FEST IN BERLIN - OCTOBER 11 - 15, 2017

Victims of radioactive contamination are the main theme of the International Uranium Film
Festival 2017. „We want to remember especially Brazils worst but forgotten radioactive accident
that happened exactly 30 years ago in September 1987“, says Uranium Film Festival director
Norbert G. Suchanek. Two young scavengers found a radiation therapy device in an abandoned
cancer treatment Hospital in the city of Goiânia, capitol of the Brazilian state of Goiás. They sold
it to a scrap metal dealer who opened it. He did not know that it contained highly radioactive,
deadly Cesium-137 crystals and unwillingly contaminated his family, friends and hundreds of
others.

The International Uranium Film Festivals has reached its 7th year. Since its start in 2011 in Rio de
Janeiro the Uranium Film Festival became today the world's most well-known film festival about
nuclear power, the „Atomic Cannes". In the past years the festival already traveled to three
continents, seven countries and about 30 cities from Rio to New York, Hollywood and New Delhi.
The 7th International Uranium Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro is scheduled for May/June 2017 in
the Cinematheque of the Modern Art Museum. And from October 11th to 15th the Uranium
Film Festival will happen this year for the sixth time in Berlin. Venues are the Cinestar film theatre
in the KulturBrauerei and the Zeiss-Großplanetarium.

Victims of radioactive contamination and nuclear accidents are the focus of the Uranium Film
Festival 2017 circuit. It will remember especially the Brazilian „Chernobyl“, an accident with
radioactive Cesium-137 that happened 30 years ago in September 1987 in Goiânia.

Uranium Film Festival partners

Partner of the Uranium Film Festival 2017 in Berlin are Cinestar, Zeiss-Großplanetarium Berlin,
ICBUW Germany, COOP Anti-War Café Berlin, IALANA, IPPNW Germany and Sayonara Nukes Berlin.

Uranium Film Festival Award

The International Uranium Film Festival Award is a piece of art produced by Brazilian wastematerial-
artist Getúlio Damado, who lives and works in the famous artist quarter Santa Teresa in
Rio de Janeiro where the first International Uranium Film Festival was held in May 2011. Getúlio
creates the Uranium Film Festival Award from waste material that he finds in the streets of Santa
Teresa. He uses also old watches to remember the first atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima.
Watches in Hiroshima stopped exactly at 8:15 in the morning when the A-bomb exploded on
August 6th, 1945. The award is called „Yellow Einstein“.
