FEFF 19 pays tribute to SUZUKI SEIJUN

FEFF 19 and CG Entertainment decided to pay tribute to the great Japanese director and will present the restored version of major cult film Branded to Kill as a world premiere in Udine!

UDINE – With the passing of Suzuki Seijun we have lost one of the great international filmmakers, who will be sorely missed by the Far East Film Festival, that in previous months had prepared, on the occasion of its 19th edition (21st– 29th April), a dedication to the director in collaboration with CG Entertainment. More precisely, a special tribute to the Suzuki’s most famous title, Branded to Kill, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary since its release and which Udine’s festival will screen in a wonderful version restored by Criterion (in collaboration with Nikkatsu) as a world premiere.

FEFF 19, bidding farewell to Suzuki Seijun, will also present the brand new box set from CG Entertainment containing Branded to Kill in DVD and Blu-ray, plus the book Time and Place are Nonsense by Tom Vick (a guest at last year’s edition of the festival). A monographic DVD box set with 5 films (Youth of the Beast, Tokyo Drifter, Detective Bureau, The Woman Sharper, Fighting Elegy) will also be available for purchase.

Branded to Kill, a film revered by Quentin Tarantino, who has on many occasions mentioned it as a source of inspiration, is without a doubt one of the biggest cult pictures by Nikkatsu Action.

A yakuza movie loved also by Jim Jarmusch and widely regarded as an absolute masterpiece of the Absurd! Back in 2005, Udine’s FEFF organised a retrospective centred around Japanese film company Nikkatsu and hosted Joe Shishido, main actor in Branded to Kill. Here are the eloquent and ironic words of the Japanese star (from No Borders, No Limits: Nikkatsu Action Cinema, written by Mark Schilling for the FEFF): «That was a great movie - for something incomprehensible. A few Japanese understood it, like the members of the Waseda University Film Study Circle. It was popular with them, but no one came to see it. I mean no one.».

LIGADOS AOS FILMES PRESENTES NO FESTIVAL NA SUA 37ª EDIÇÃO

Spotlight: Guillaume Canet

Guillaume Canet’s sensational, highly diverse acting career has garnered him a reputation rendering him a household name in his native France, as well earning him significant recognition internationally. The celebrated film figure has also thrived in forging the notoriously tricky transition from acting to directing, a delicate evolution that takes as much brazen pluck as it does sensitive astuteness. Indeed, Canet’s gradual shift into directorial work strikingly demonstrates his unique ability to hold down the title of actor, filmmaker and screenwriter with unwavering adeptness.

Beginning his acting career in the world of theatre and television before moving on to film, Canet starred in tens of TV movies and feature productions, including English director Danny Boyle’s The Beach (2000) starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Yann Samuell French-Belgian hit Love Me If You Dare (2003), in which he starred alongside Marion Cotillard. Afterwards, he directed a varied assortment of productions while continuing with his acting engagements, making large waves with his critical, box-office success Tell No One (2006), one of a long string of César and Étoile d’Or-nominated films that have captured French and international audiences alike.

guillaume4He made his initial foray onto the directorial scene with a duo of short films, Sans regrets (1996) and Je t’aime (1998), before collaborating with Jean-Christophe Pagnac two years later on Avalanche, a terse portrayal of a young, drug-addled couple, produced as part of the French anthology film Drug Scenes, a composite of 24 short French-language films centring on the theme of drug abuse. That same year, the actor-turned- director returned with the 10-minute- long comedy, J’peux pas dormir… starring Isabelle Carré, Vincent Elbaz and his prior collaborator Jean- Christophe Pagnac, following a young Antoine’s doggedly unabashed endeavour to reconcile with his ex-girlfriend, Julie, after a year long separation by simply returning to her apartment as if nothing had changed – despite the obvious presence of her new boyfriend sleeping in front of the television.

Canet’s feature-length debut, the wittily absorbing crime-comedy Whatever You Say (2002), emerged as his first breakthrough film and a relatively successful box- office hit. Played by the actor-director himself, the film centres on determined young production assistant, Bastien, who is awarded the opportunity to host his own television show after being spotted by high-powered producer, Jean-Louis Broustal (François Berléand) – a perspicuous drama that garnered Canet a nomination at the César Awards for Best First Work of Fiction. The director extended his exploration of the darker, enigmatic aspects of human relationships with the mystery drama Tell No One, a film-noir style portrayal of a middle-aged couple’s shattering experiences after Alexandre (François Cluzet) is singled out as a suspect in his wife’s sudden murder, a predicament rendered more baffling when he receives clues causing him to believe that his wife is in fact alive.

guillaume2Canet’s temporary departure from his trademark comedic tone is reversed with his return to more familiar terrain in the endearingly funny drama, Little White Lies (2010), an exploration of the unavoidability of pain and grief in emotionally intricate relationships as a group of longtime friends decide to resume their vacation plans despite a friend’s hospitalization as a result of a near-fatal accident. Starring a stellar ensemble cast – François Cluzet (his return after Tell No One), Marion Cotillard, Benoît Magimel, Gilles Lellouche, Jean Dujardin and more – the film portrays the inevitable breakdown that occurs when their secrets and regrets threaten to erupt – a subtly transfixing, genre-bending, emotional-cartwheel that gained a nomination for an Audience Award at the European Film Awards.

Three years later, Canet triumphantly returned with his fourth feature, the Brooklyn-bound, 1970s crime thriller Blood Ties (2013), centring on the highly- strained relationship between two brothers on opposite sides of the law – middle- aged Chris (Clive Owen), a recently released ex-convict and his younger brother Frank (Billy Crudup), a young police officer with a promising career. Featuring a heavyweight cast of Hollywood starlets – brown-tressed, charming Mila Kunis plays Chris’s new girlfriend Natalie with whom he failingly attempts to forge a new life, Frank’s family-bound, former lover Vanessa is embodied by a beguilingly Zoe Saldana and Marion Cotillard – signalling Canet’s third directorial collaboration with his long-time wife – plays the alluringly troubled Monica, a drug-addicted prostitute.

guillaume3The director swiftly followed-up the star-studded feature with a brief return to short-length productions with the release of Ivresse (2013), a stylistic, substance abuse public announcement created in partnership with French-based organizations L’Association Ferdinand and le Fondation VINCI Autoroutes – starring Juliette Dol and Sébastien Magne – which tells the truncated story of a young couple’s pivotal life moments, from their first encounter to an event that irrevocably shatters both of their lives. Currently in cinemas in France, Canet’s latest feature, Rock ‘n Roll, an irreverent, tongue-in- cheek meta-comedy narrating the director’s experiences (Canet plays himself in the film) as he struggles to come to terms with the apparent fact that he is not the audience-attracting film star that he was in his younger years, portrays his brazen attempts to prove his naysayers wrong by shaking up his image with the help of his partner, Marion Cotillard (also playing herself in the film).

Canet has proved himself to be a helmer with immensely wide-ranging directorial capabilities, producing an eclectic variety of productions varying from bittersweet romantic dramas to side-splittingly witty comedies and somber thrillers. Over the decades, just as he has carved out an extraordinarily stellar acting career, he is likewise cementing a place for himself as a formidable directorial talent with an ever rising star.

KAFFNY INFINITE MEDIA
HIDDEN INTERSECTIONS OF GLOBAL CULTURE

In its 11th year operating in the arts scene of New York City and 4th year in Brooklyn, KAFFNY invites the world to participate in creating the first platform for "Infinite Media." Culture is not a fixed point. The mere idea of a "tradition" can be used for inhuman purposes. By applying the concept of infinity, KAFFNY turns the dialogue to all those artists who recognize a needed deference to the concept of humanity, and away from any official definition of global culture.

KAFFNY's expertise in programming comes from the application of a third culture perspective, which is a proactive form of cultural awareness from the inside-out, rather than politically reactive. For the first ten years, KAFFNY honed this by looking at the condition of the Korean diaspora, showing films from five continents, with all kinds of ethnicities, characters, stories, genres and mediums.

We are now accepting submissions for our 11th Annual film festival, taking place in Brooklyn, New York in October 2017.

Our programming will fall into two main sections: INFINITE MEDIA and KOREAN DIASPORA. Our staff shall determine which sections are most appropriate for selected films. Films from either section are eligible to compete for Most Infinite Feature and Most Infinite Short (inclusive of narrative and documentary forms).

I) INFINITE MEDIA Program
In furthering its expansion into "third culture" territory at the 10th Annual in 2016, KAFFNY is taking the cultural application of its mission into infinity. There is no other concept that is more boundless to the imagination of potential global culture. Films will be selected on the basis of the degree to which they expand our imaginations of culture, globally. Films do not need to explicitly or very obviously portray this. In fact, we think global culture is probably best expressed through an individual's story. To get an idea of what we mean, you can see our past programming on our website: kaffny.com.

II) KOREAN DIASPORA Program
KAFFNY invites filmmakers of all backgrounds to submit for consideration films that are relevant to the Korean American community, the Korean diaspora, Korean-identified persons, or as our name implies, New York. KAFFNY also considers works outside the Korean nexus featuring at least one key creative member of Korean heritage, regardless of the subject matter.

Submissions are being accepted in the following categories:

1) FEATURE
Narrative or documentary, for films longer than 50 minutes, completed any year. Films completed January 1, 2016 or later are eligible for competition (if any, at KAFFNY discretion).

2) SHORTS
All genres, for films shorter than 50 minutes, completed any year. Short films completed January 1, 2016 or later are eligible for competition (if any, at KAFFNY discretion).

GENERAL RULES

KAFFNY defines a short film as any film with a running time less than 50 minutes.

KAFFNY defines a feature film as any film with a running time greater then 50 minutes.

Non-narrative and experimental films of any length may be submitted to Shorts.

KAFFNY prefers at least New York City premieres (first time screening theatrically to the public), but will make exceptions if it determines an audience still exists for additional local screenings. Films having received any theatrical or home-video distribution of any kind beyond festival screenings or that have been broadcast on television or the Internet may similarly be considered.

Films that have only had private, unpublicized screenings do not count against KAFFNY's premiere preference.

Films that have been previously submitted to KAFFNY are ineligible.

The applicant holds the sole responsibility of copyright clearance of any copyrighted material in the film. Films including unauthorized copyrighted material are ineligible.

Films not in English must be subtitled in English unless dialogue is minimal and not necessary for the comprehension of the film.

*** The final screening copy of your accepted film must be received by KAFFNY no later than August 31, 2017. If screening copy is not received by then, KAFFNY retains the right to disqualify the film, without refund of the submission fee.

TERMS

Multiple versions of the same film will not be considered.

If the submitted material does not play, KAFFNY will make an attempt to contact the applicant based on the contact information supplied at the time of submission in order to obtain a replacement. If a replacement is not available, KAFFNY reserves the right to disqualify the film without refunding the submission fees.

KAFFNY will attempt, but is under no obligation, to view a submission that arrives after the designated deadline without refund of the submission fee.

KAFFNY reserves the right to excerpt portions and scenes of your film at no fee, up to 1 minute, for use in promotional materials.

There is no guaranteed travel stipend or reimbursement for filmmakers.

Udine Far East Film Festival, the new 2017 poster!

FEFF 19

The girl and the rooster: the double symbol of the 2017 edition!

The Chinese zodiac? A mythical creature? A homage to Ren Hang?

Here is the brand new creation by Roberto Rosolin

for the 19th Far East Film Festival!

When most people think of oriental traditions, the Chinese zodiac immediately comes to mind. An almost alien resemblance that will grab the attention of science-fiction buffs. Photography aficionados will most definitely see it as a tribute to Ren Hang. It’s hard to pinpoint an exact interpretation, if indeed there is one, but what is important is the visual power: the topic at hand is the image that Roberto Rosolin has created for the 19th Far East Film Festival. After the pop icon of 2015 (remember Bruce Lee’s yellow jumpsuit?) and the enigmatic female profile of 2016, here is the brand new creation of the graphic designer from Gorizia: a close-up of a beautiful young Asian woman, with a colourful, menacing and unexpected rooster partially overlapping her face.

The countdown to the 19th edition of the Far East Film Festival has begun, Udine will be under the spotlights from 21st to 29th April. The lineup features more than 60 of the best 2016/2017 Asian productions and includes blockbusters, cult and fringe movies and also auteur films from all over Asia.

The #FEFF19 schedule – just a reminder, 13th March is the deadline to purchase discounted accreditations (all related info on www.fareastfilm.com) – will, as always, be embellished by all kinds of collateral cultural events around Udine’s city centre. Last but certainly not least, the Festival will present the third edition of the FEFF Campus, the educational project dedicated to young Asian and European journalists, Ties That Bind, the international workshop that brings western and eastern producers together and Focus Asia, the new market dedicated to future European and Asian genre film projects.

Roberto Rosolin was born in Gorizia in 1980. After his studies, he started his career as a graphic designer in Friuli Venezia Giulia before moving to London, where he now lives and works. He is currently Art Director of Fabric, historic music venue in London, and of the record label of the same name, which received much international attention.

His work with photographer Mads Perch has recently been used for the cover of Creative Review.
