The Film4Climate Global Video Competition opens today as the centerpiece of the Connect4Climate initiative to promote sustainability in the creative industries through active engagement with young people in finding solutions to climate change. Send in your videos either through our website or at film4climate.net.

Announced at the Cannes Film Festival by the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate global partnership program, the competition will be open for submissions through September 15, with the winners to be announced at a high-profile awards ceremony at the United Nations COP22 Climate Summit in Marrakesh, Morocco in November.

The winning entries will receive cash prizes of $8,000, $5,000, and $2,000 for first, second and third place in each of two categories: an under one-minute Public Service Advertisement (PSA) or a Short Film up to five minutes.

The competition offers filmmakers a chance to have their work reviewed by a jury chaired by Bernardo Bertolucci, and including other preeminent directors, producers, writers and political leaders.

At the competition’s announcement in Cannes, producer and jury member Lawrence Bender said, “In every country, every city, people have different stories on climate change...there are many stories that can be told. If this worldwide film competition creates a critical mass of ideas and energy, it could help tip the balance in terms of focusing people’s attention.”

As the next five years will be critical to advancing and scaling up climate action around the world as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the COP22 climate summit aims to encourage countries to implement ambitious climate actions, with youth playing a vital role in the agenda.

“It is not our role to inspire youth, it is they who inspire us every single day. Our mission is to provide them with a platform, and COP22 will be the opportunity to show the world the creativity of young filmmakers and how they are taking action on climate change,” stated Dr. Hakima El Haite, Delegate Minister in Charge of Environment, Morocco, Special Envoy for Mobilization of COP22, and High-Level Champion of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Nick Nuttall, Spokesperson/Head of Communications, UNFCCC, adds, “In order to unleash the full potential of the Paris Climate Change Agreement towards a better, more climate-safe world, all sectors of society and all walks of life need to be on board, including the creative industries. We are therefore delighted to be working with Connect4Climate to raise awareness on how the film industry can fast forward its contribution, and to showcase these achievements in Morocco in November at the next UN climate change conference.”

Sheila Redzepi, Vice President of External and Corporate Relations, World Bank Group, says: “Climate change is a real and global threat affecting people’s wellbeing, livelihoods, the environment and economies. Communication is a powerful tool in furthering understanding of its impact and inspiring action to tackle it. That’s why I welcome this initiative and the support it has received from partners who, in their own fields, are leading the way in finding solutions.”

In addition to the main cash prizes a number of special prizes will be awarded to outstanding entries. These include a People’s Choice award, a MENA-Award for the best entry from the Middle East and North Africa region, and a “Price on Carbon Pollution” award. Other prizes, including worldwide distribution by Vulcan Productions, will be awarded as determined by presenting partners. Vulcan previously partnered with the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate program to produce the spectacular large-scale architectural projection and public art display of images of climate change on St. Peter’s Basilica in December 2015, as a gift to Pope Francis, which was seen by an audience of several billion people.

Carole Tomko, General Manager and Creative Director of Vulcan Productions, said: “We know the immense power of imagery and storytelling to change the way people view an issue, to raise awareness and inspire progress. That is what we are looking for in the entries to this competition: a brief, brilliant film that energizes and communicates a new sense of possibility.”

“This competition is a chance for young people to tell a story that may change the world,” said Lucia Grenna, Program Manager of Connect4Climate, the global partnership program behind the competition. “The science of climate change is beyond debate. Politicians are moving in the direction of a solution. What we need now is the creative push that the passion and imagination of young people can provide. We need their images and words to tell a story that inspires individual responsibility and collective action on a global scale.”

The competition is the outcome of a partnership between the World Bank Group’s Connect4Climate program, the United Nations, Vulcan Productions, and the Italian energy company Enel, which has endorsed the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and targeted carbon neutrality for its operations by 2050. Other presenting partners include theUNFCCCUN Sustainable DevelopmentUNEPThe Global Brain, and the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco. In addition, more than 50 collaborating partners are supporting the competition.

Connect4Climate receives support from the Italian and German governments, as well as from the private and public sectors, and academia. Join the climate knowledge partnership.

Emerging filmmakers in focus at the 12th edition of FEST- New Directors | New Films in Portugal

FEST - New Directors | New Films Festival is a unique celebration of new cinema and new filmmakers. The festival will host its 12th edition in 2016, between the 20th  and 27th of June, in Espinho, Portugal. For its upcoming edition, FEST will bring to its audience over 170 shorts and features by some of the most promising directors from around the world.

The festival kicks off on June 20 with the Portuguese premiere of “Tangerine”, Sean Baker’s film where gut laughs are plentiful and whose electric energy and contagious eccentricity will leave nobody indifferent. Sean Baker's most recent work has won a total of 19 awards worldwide, with the fabulous Mya Taylor earning, deservingly so, the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The programme of FEST- New Directors | New Films includes a competitive section for first and second features, with subsections for fiction and documentary.

The Golden Lynx Competitions for Fiction Feature includes 7 films spanning 3 continents. The selection includes the Portuguese premieres of several films that have already been acclaimed in major film festivals. It is the case of “Flocking” by Beata Gardeler, which already counts in its palmares a Crystal Bear at the 2015 Berlinale, or “The Fits” by Anna Rose Holmer which has been praised by critics and public alike in festivals such as the San Francisco International Film Festival and Sundance.

The complete list of titles is:

"Aloys" by Tobias Nolle (Switzerland/France)

“Granny's Dancing on the Table” by Hanna Skold (Sweden)

“The Fits” by Anna Rose Holmer (USA)

“Baby Bump” by Kuba Czkaj (Poland)

“Treppe Aufwaerts” by Mia Meyer (Germany)

“Flocking” by Beata Gardeler” (Sweden)

“Easy Ball” by Juan Fernandez Gebauer & Nicolas Suarez (Argentina)

Three films will compete for the Golden Lynx for Best Documentary Feature. Female figures are at the forefront of two of the titles in this section. “Alisa in Warland” by Alisa Kovalenko & Liubov Durakova (Poland/Ukraine) is a truly unique first person experience of a young woman's search for truth in times of war, while “Starless Dreams” by Mehrdad Oskouei (Iran) offers a rare glimpse inside a locked-up world and a respectful portrait of young women struggling to recapture some sense of personal dignity. The selection is completed by the only Portuguese title in the features competitions, “Brothers” by Pedro Magano (Portugal). The film, set in the São Miguel island, in the Azores, is an impressive voyage through a tradition without equal, featuring breathtaking photography work. “Brothers” offers a portrait of an island not just lost in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, but also lost in time.

FEST- New Directors | New Films also includes a competitive section for shorts- with four subsections, each with a dedicated Silver Lynx Award: fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental.

With 24 films in the lineup and 4 sessions in total, the Fiction Short section includes titles such as “Operator” by Caroline Bartleet (UK)- winner of the BAFTA for Best British Short this year- or “Black Friday” by Roxana Stroe (Romania), whose film “A Night in Tokoriki” received the Special Jury Prize in the Generation 14plus at the 2016 Berlinale.

The Silver Lynx competition for Documentary Short includes 11 titles. Among them is “9 days – From my window in Aleppo” by Floor van der Meulen (Netherlands), a document of the start of the Syrian uprising in Aleppo as seen through the eyes- and window- of Syrian photographer Issa Touma.

Seven films are competing for the Silver Lynx for Best Experimental Short. The work of directors from Taiwan, Germany, Argentina, Egypt, France, and Greece, these films challenge the norms and explore new ground in filmmaking.

The Animation Short section proposes, through its 9 selected films, an exploration of the power of animation techniques to tell compelling and engaging stories on screen.

The panorama of competitive sections is completed by NEXXT, a section dedicated exclusively to student films, which is co-programmed in partnership with over 15 film schools.

FEST New Directors | New Films also features a series of non-competitive screenings. These include Flavours of the World, which focuses each year on certain countries or regions where the FEST selection team has identified encouraging signs of the emergence of a new and unique generation of filmmakers. This year Ireland, Iceland and Portugal have been selected as the countries in focus.

For its 12th edition, FEST also takes a look back at new works by filmmakers that have had films shown in past editions of the festival in its retrospective section, Be Kind Rewind.

Last, but not least, FEST- New Directors | New Films includes this year a selection of films dedicated to young viewers (in the section called Festinha) and to the elderly in the local community (through FEST Social). These screenings are part of a series of social responsibility activities through which FEST contributes to audience development at a local level.

The festival concludes with the Award Ceremony on June 26th, followed by the screening of “New World”, collectively directed by Elżbieta Benkowska, Michał Wawrzecki and Łukasz Ostalski. The three Polish directors follow three different story-lines, three different films, three different characters, but all with one common path: building a new life in a new world.

In addition to the screenings, FEST includes a Pitching Forum, in which participants have the chance to present their projects for shorts, features, television series or documentaries to a panel of experts, producers and investors who are looking for new ventures to support and invest in. A total of 31 projects have been selected this year, presented by 29 filmmakers coming from 22 countries on 3 continents (Europe, Asia and South America).

FEST New Directors | New Films is unique in that it also includes FEST - Training Ground, a 6 day educational forum that proposes a series of workshops and master classes lead by top experts with years of experience in the film industry. This year we count among the guests of the festival professionals such as: Gemma Jackson, Emmy winning production designer of “Game of Thrones”, Bela Tarr, Hungarian director of “Satantango” and “A Turin Horse”, whose films have been awarded in Cannes and Berlin, as well as Mark Sanger, Oscar winning editor of “Gravity”.

Through the festival and its parallel events, FEST brings together the highest established film professionals and young filmmakers who are starting to carve their path in the industry, providing them with an ideal context for exchanging ideas and sparking collaborations. Sharp minds, original thinkers, Virtual Reality and Artificial Intelligence at Sheffield Doc / Fest

Notes

During the Industrial Revolution this south Yorkshire city’s claim to fame was it’s steel and crucible production, today it’s celebrated Doc/Fest has put Sheffield back on the map and made it an epicenter of documentary film and factual.

Beginning in 1994 with only a handful of delegates and hundreds of participants, Sheffield Doc/Fest has grown to be UK’s largest documentary festival and the 3rd largest documentary festival in the world. This 23rd edition from June 10-15th, packed in almost 33,000 filmmakers, activists, curators, journalists, Commissioning Editors, creative Directors, heads of foundations, religious leaders, lawyers, educators, and of course the local populace. There were over 3,500 industry delegates from 60 countries. Out of the 160 international and UK documentaries that were screened, 29 were world premieres, 52 were UK premiers, 14 were international premiers, and 19 were European premiers.

Spirits did not dampen even for those shivering under umbrellas at the outdoor cinema watching films on LCD screens in the punishing rain, or for others waiting in long queues hoping to buy tickets that were already sold out. People remained upbeat, enthusiastic, friendly and engaged, it was inspiring, uplifting, and because Sheffield is known for its music and parties late into the night… fun.

Advance preparation is required to navigate your way successfully through these 6 intense days where 340 events- films/sessions/panels and talks compete for your attention and attendance. Each panel was important and thought provoking, but sometimes scheduled simultaneously caused frustration and disappointment. There was a Marketplace for business activities, funding, sales, and distribution and this year’s flagship Meet Market offered a private pitching opportunity for filmmakers to meet with international funders, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents and exhibitors and discuss creative and financial matters.

In addition, the pilot program called the On-Screen Factual Talent Market connected individuals with expert knowledge in different disciplines with producers and commissioners looking for new talent. From 70 applications, 18 chosen candidates had 5 minutes to pitch their project to a decision maker in a “speed-date” like format. The shortlisted participants received pitch training leading up to the event, and met one-on-one with TV professionals during the festival. Instead of feeling satisfied after 4 days of leap frogging between venues, I discovered I had missed so many of the  80+ talks.

Some fest highlights included the Channel 4 Interview with Michael Moore who opened the festival with “Where to Invade Next”, a talk with 90 year old Sir David Attenborough, broadcaster-naturalist, the voice of British Natural History Programs for over 65 years, a panel entitled “Our BBC, Our Channel 4: A Future for Public Service TV?” with Lord David Puttnam, distinguished Film Producer and educator, with Ralph Lee-Head of Factual and Deputy Chief Creative Officer, Channel 4, Patrick Holland- Head of Documentaries, BBC, and Hugh Harris- Director - Media, International, Gambling & Creative Economy, DCMS, a discussion with (also 90 year old) documentary legend and one of America’s pioneers of Direct Cinema, D.A. Pennebaker, and Chris Hegedus who presented their film “Unlocking the Cage”, an interview with political filmmaker and Cannes Palme d’Or winner Ken Loach who accompanied “Versus: The Life and Films of Ken Loach”, a talk with writer-filmmaker Louis Theroux about his Scientology movie, a panel with award winning Director-Cinematographer Kristen Johnson called Female Trailblazers: New Ways of Working in Media, a discussion with Joanna Lumley OBE, actor, producer, doc maker, an “In Conversation” session with Sheila Nevins, President of HBO Documentary films who received the Creative Leadership Award, interviewed by Nick Fraser of BBC Storyville, and  Tilda Swinton and co-director Bartek Dziadosz who closed the festival with their documentary “ The Seasons In Quincy: Four Portraits of John Berger”.

Talks included: “There’s Something About Muslims”, “Surviving Danger Zone Docs”,  “Viva la Revolucion: Video Activism and Citizen Journalism”, “Honest Truths: The Ethical Challengers of Filmmaking”, “Documentary and Trauma: A Survival Guide”,“Does it Matter Who Funds my Film?”, “What Happens when Doc Makers Join Non Profits”,“Between Activism and Extremism: Storytelling for Change”, “Roadmap to Film Funding: Unlocking the Mysteries of Grant Proposals”, “Notes on Blindness: A Film and VR Autopsy”, “Docs in the Newsroom”, “Telling Deceptively Big Stories in Tiny Online Spaces”, “War of the Worlds” How DADA-Data Webdoc Virus Defends the World”, “Into the Land of VOD: How I Tried to Contact Netflix”, “Vlogs Vs Docs: Tales of Our Time”, “Is Documentary Relevant in a World with Information Available at Your Fingertips?”,

“Alternate Realities Summit: Androids, Robots”, “Avatars Live, The Hype about 4K”, “Minority Report: Diversity in Documentary”,  “How to Document the World’s Biggest News Stories: Telling the Refugee Crisis”  moderated by award winning Roger Graef, “How to Get Your Theatrical Doc Funded and Distributed”,  “How to Put Kids on TV: A Channel 4 Masterclass” , “How to Pitch your Climate Change Idea”,  “How to Pitch your Academic Idea”       and the list goes on…

Sheffield’s Doc/Fest Alternate Realities summit and exhibitions platform has an ever-growing (virtual) footprint and showcased virtual and augmented reality, interactive media and VR talks and exhibitions that includes 360 degree videos, photos and animation described as a film-maker’s “new innovative ways of immersive story-telling”. Featuring 14 immersive media experiences and 12 Virtual Reality documentaries in galleries around town that were filled to capacity, the events ranged from a virtual experience of solitary confinement in prison, an immersive Spacewalk experience, a journey to Mars, to the 1916 Easter Rising, (the armed insurrection by Irish republicans during Easter).

The winner of the first ever VR Award, “Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness” will be sent to selected nationwide venues alongside previews of the documentary feature film “Notes on Blindness” in partnership with Curzon Artificial Eye and Sheffield Doc/Fest and for the first time this year, a 5,000 pound VR commission was awarded to Darren Emerson’s VR installation project ‘Invisible’ that deals with the dehumanization of migrants held in UK jails.

At Sheffield's Millennium Gallery you could find the New Dimensions in Testimony exhibition and experience a "virtual encounter" with Holocaust survivor Pinchas Gutter in a 360 degree video. It was the first time in Europe that this ground breaking technology was presented. Executive Director of the Shoah Foundation, Dr. Stephen Smith and his team, compiled the audio and visual data for the project using natural language software.

Audiences can interact with this recorded image and ask Mr. Gutter questions about his life, his childhood, his survival in the concentration camps. Powered by complex algorithms, Pinchas responds in real time, and can carry on a realistic conversation. Having been filmed over 25 hours Pinchas can reply to 1,000 different questions. This revolutionary natural language technology developed by the USC Shoah Foundation and The Institute for Visual History and Education presented an exhibition that won the 2016 Doc/Fest New Alternate Realities Interactive Award.

“I think documentaries are the greatest things in the whole world, It’s the way strangers meet strangers and learn to love each other” says HBO Documentary Films President Sheila Nevins who received the festival’s inaugural Creative Leadership Award. As an executive producer, Nevins won 31 Primetime Emmy Awards, 34 News and Documentary Emmys and 40 Peabody Awards, under her management, HBO docs have won 26 Oscars.  “The main reason the docu brand of HBO today is famous is  because nobody was doing documentaries- maybe the Brits were, but in America, ‘documentary’ meant ‘politics,’ it meant, ‘What’s wrong with the government, is the CIA doing its job?’ They were not storytelling documentaries when I came in. I think the legitimacy of telling a story is… the longer you can hold on to that truth, the better it is” Nevins says.

Arte, the superb European channel devoted to culture and the arts that began as a collaboration between  France and Germany announced that its programs will available online in English and Spanish. ARTE takes part in the promotion of multilingualism and the circulation of cultural works in Europe. ARTE programs, 85% produced in Europe, are now available in four languages. In addition to French and German, 600 hours of documentaries, magazines and live performing arts are to be seen with English and Spanish subtitles by the end of 2016.

And finally, among the remarkable  new films screened, many followed by Q & A’s were :   “StoryboardP, a Stranger in Sweden”, “Bobby Sands: 66 Days”, “City40”, “Cameraperson”, “Jim: The James Foley Story”, “Notes on Blindness”, “Presenting Princess Shaw”, “The Settlers”, “Tempestad”, “Born to be Free”, “Miss Sharon Jones”, “The Age of Consequences”, “Snow Monkey”, “Sonita”, “My Aleppo”, “Unlocking the Cage”, “After Spring”, “#MyEscape”, “Ambulance”, “My Scientology Movie”, “Burma’s Secret Jungle War with Joe Simpson”, “Exodus”: “Breaking into Europe”, “Kiki”, “India in a Day”, “Monster in the Mind The Convenient UN-truth about Alzeimer’s”, “Rwanda & Juliet”, “In Pursuit of Silence”…. to name a few

On Sunday, July 24th of 2016, an announcement had been delivered to the public about cancelling the 4th edition of Duhok IFF due to economical crisis and lack of support. This news shocked the public and was followed by a reaction from the festival’s audience, national and international film community, several supporting campaigns by artists, filmmakers and journalists from the four parts of Kurdistan and the international community. Voices raised asking to resume this extra ordinary event and its positive impact on the region.

Several campaigns started and hundreds of local and international film community, public, and film festival representatives signed to support and resume the festival. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, July 26th a gathering was made by the people of Duhok, artists and public in the city center calling to resume Duhok IFF and protested against the cancelation of the event.

This chain of campaigns and reactions left a remarkable impact on Duhok IFF’s organizers, and a pressure on the government to resume and support the festival in these hard conditions and crisis. This was followed by a meeting with Duhok’s Governor, Mr. Farhad Atroshi, who showed his kind support and discussed the possibilities of resuming the festival with the organizers upon the request of the people and the high demand of the film community, worldwide. Therefore, as a respect to the call of Duhok citizens, artists and public figures of Kurdistan and international community, the Duhok Governorate took action and announced it’s support by securing the required budget to resume the festival.

Duhok IFF's crew, would like to show acknowledgment and appreciations to Kurdistan Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Nechirvan Barzani for his continuous support. Also, we send our thanks and appreciations to Mr. Farhad Atroshi, the Governor of Duhok for taking immediate action to rescue this cultural event, and not let it die. We also thank Mr. Khalid Doski, the Minister of Youth and Cultural Affairs of Kurdistan Regional Government for his support. Special Thanks to Duhok's Artists Syndicate, Mali Cinema of Sulemani, parliaments and officials, media agencies for their coverages, NGOs, artists and supporters from the four parts of Kurdistan and world wide.

Eventually, a very special thank to the people of Duhok for their supporting campaigns. They proved that this festival is each and everyone’s asset. All these, added more to our duties and responsibilities towards the event. Therefore, we announce the continuation of Duhok 4th international film festival to be held in September 9th – 16th, 2016.

Many Thanks to this year’s Juries, filmmakers and participants for understanding the situation.

ANIMAZE ANNOUNCES FULL PROGRAMMING

ANIMAZE: The Montreal International Animation Film Festival is set to announce its full lineup in advance of the festival on August 18-21. Now in its third year, ANIMAZE is bringing a world of animation to Montreal. With a selection of over 170 short and feature-length animated films at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, an outdoor 360º Dome with planetarium-style projection and a Virtual Reality Cinema, Animaze has an inspiring and dynamic range of content across platforms and mediums.

“Montreal plays a key role in animation history, and we want to capitalize on its bright future by unifying and connecting creative people in animation, video games and new media. The possibilities have never been greater,” said Laurie Gordon, Animaze festival director.

ANIMAZE will also feature an industry conference with appearances from leaders in animation, cinema and technology, among them Nelvana cofounder Clive Smith, Carpe Diem’s Marie-Claude Beauchamp (La Guerre des Tuques), and TELETOON director of content Athena Georgaklis. It will highlight the many Québec innovations in virtual reality, immersive content and storytelling.

In addition to many other Quebec premieres, ANIMAZE will host new episodes of Au pays de têtes à claques, and its new English version Blockheads, airing on Adult Swim Canada in the fall.

The outdoor 360º dome in collaboration is a first in Quebec and offers immersive end-to-end projections with surround sound. Making its Canadian premiere at the Dome is Android Jones’ Samskara. OSM 360º sets visuals to the music of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra directed by Kent Nagano.

The film festival lineup includes films from over 45 countries in a wide range of genres and styles. The International Student Film Contest features entries from students at over nine Quebec animation schools including the Centre NAD, Cégep du Vieux Montréal and UQAM.

In collaboration with Boulevard St-Laurent,ANIMAZE will host two free public outdoor screenings on Friday and Saturday night, featuring a showcase on international student films, a horror section, and a female directors’ focus.
