The residencies running for the second edition of Ikusmira Berriak, a programme providing support to audiovisual projects organised by San Sebastian, European Capital of Culture 2016, Tabakalera-International Centre for Contemporary culture and the San Sebastian Festival, with the collaboration of Donostia Kultura and the Filmoteca Vasca, began on August 15th. During the residencies, lasting for six weeks, filmmakers Leo Calice, Mikel Gurrea, Aitor and Amaia Merino and Kiro Russo will develop the four selected projects in Tabakalera’s Creators’ Space. To help them with the process, during the first four weeks masterclasses have been organised by Fernanda del Nido, founder of the independent production company Tic Tac Company, the filmmaker John Paul Sniadecki, whose films push the limits of the documentary genre, and Manuel Arranz, former director of the Spanish RTVE network’s La2 channel and producer of television programmes. In addition, the residents will have carte blanche to programme a film forming part of their movie references at Tabakalera.

In the fifth week of their stay, coinciding with the start of the San Sebastian Festival, the participants will prepare a pitch - a detailed presentation of the audiovisual project to international producers and sales agents potentially interested in co-producing and distributing their work - to be made in the Festival’s industry space, where 1,496 accredited guests gathered last year. The residents will have the opportunity to organise meetings with Industry Club attendees, participate in its activities as professionals and will be issued with a pass to attend all screenings at the event. Their stay will end, precisely, on September 25th, the day after the end of the Festival.

Over the six weeks the participants will be accompanied and advised by the same expert committee responsible for selecting their projects from among the 33 submitted: Paz Lázaro, head of programming for the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival; Sergio Oksman, Brazilian film director (Goodbye America, A Story for the Modlins, O Futebol) and head of the production company Dok Films, and Ada Solomon, film producer and founder of HiFilm Productions. “I think the programme is a real boon for any artist. It is a great opportunity to research and create peacefully, away from home and everyday obligations, in the extraordinary setting of San Sebastian and with the support of an incredible Festival”, analysed Solomon, who found it difficult to choose between the different projects. “I was impressed by the quality of the proposals and thought it would be impossible to choose only four of them. To make the selection we considered them globally: the originality of the proposal, the quality of the project, the filmmaker’s ability to transfer their idea to cinema and their talent and experience”, explained the Romanian producer.

These are the first impressions after ten days’ work at Tabakalera of Leo Calice, selected in the Lab category (Clermont-Ferrand Festival’s experimental short film section); Mikel Gurrea, from the Kimuak short film selection; Aitor and Amaia Merino, from the Basque Autonomous Community Filmmakers category; and Kiro Russo, chosen from among participants in the International Film Students Meeting (EIECINE) running yearly at the San Sebastian Festival.

“The time spent here will represent a major step forward in making our short film”

“I see Ikusmira Berriak as a biotope that provides the ecosystem for developing projects, something which, it goes without saying, is enormously important. It paves the way for a process of exploring aesthetic and technical questions, something which is related to the production of our film”, explains Leo Calice, who is working on an animated documentary, Calipatria, co-directed with Gerhard Treml. “During the Tabakalera residency I will construct the film studio for shooting the short and will test production methods to decide exactly how we will produce it. Ikusmira Berriak will not only provide the time and space to do it, but also relevant masterclasses and the feedback of colleagues and experts. I’m really looking forward to the classes and to the exchange with the other residents, which I have no doubt will be very valuable. The time spent here will represent a major step forward in the making of our short film”.

Mikel Gurrea

“Ikusmira Berriak assigns the creative process the importance it deserves”

“The experience is turning out to be intense and enormously interesting. We’ve had the opportunity to meet the residency organisers, who have welcomed and helped us from the beginning, and to exchange points of view with the participating filmmakers. It’s still early days, but the feeling is great”, he said. “I believe that Ikusmira Berriak has got it right by assigning the creative process the importance it deserves. The residency gives us the space, time and resources to develop and find the stories we want to tell, to generate material and experiment with the aim of leaving here with a more solid project. The fact that it all culminates with a pitching session at the Zinemaldia is really exciting and pushes you to work on making the film you’re looking for”, he notes. Personally speaking, he explains, “the residency is helping me to write, which is what I need. It’s helping me to test a more dynamic and flowing creative process, something I’d tried at small scale and which I can develop more intensely here. It’s helping me to take risks to find the best way to tell the story”. That’s why, he concludes, “I hope Ikusmira Berriak will continue to run for many years. It truly deserves it”.

Aitor and Amaia Merino

“We plant the seed and Ikusmira Berriak gives us the soil and the water to make it grow”

Siblings Aitor and Amaia Merino consider that “the experience is hugely enriching”. On the one hand, the tutorials help to give you a clear idea of the project objectives and, on the other, working with the other residents gives us the opportunity to share doubts and concerns. The Tabakalera space is perfect, we feel really at home working here”, they remark. In their opinion, Ikusmira Berriak represents “a boost to get creators up and started”. “Apart from everything you learn, we have a very high standard professional team to help us and give us advice at this stage, which you normally do with no help whatsoever. On top of this is the opportunity to enter the market offered by the Film Festival. If we add to this the creation and production workshops, the residency is an all-rounder. We plant the seed and Ikusmira Berriak gives us the soil and the water to ensure that the project grows strongly”, they conclude. Moreover, Amaia lives in Ecuador and Aitor in Madrid, meaning that meeting to work “is always complicated”. “Ikusmira Berriak has allowed us to come together and get down to work, and in our city to boot. For us the programme is a boon”, they admitted.

Kiro Russo

“This residency is one of its kind”

“I’m really looking forward to it”, explained the Bolivian moviemaker fresh from his participation in the Cineasti del Presente section at the Locarno Festival, where he garnered a special mention for Viejo Calavera. “I’m blown away by the Tabakalera installations, it’s the most incredible cultural centre I’ve ever seen. I think it’s a tremendous luxury to be able to work in this mind-blowing space; as if that wasn’t enough, San Sebastian is a magical and beautiful city perfect for letting yourself be carried away by ideas, for getting down to writing and experimenting with projects”. “We’ll have so much backing not only thanks to the comfort of the space and the endless access to all sorts of filmed and printed material, but also thanks to the dialogue kicking in with the other residency participants and with the tutors backing the projects. I think this residency is one of its kind for its particular backing of films seeking to explore new forms of cinematic language; it is a hugely important initiative”.

On the occasion of the German Premiere of Pasha Rafiy’s “Foreign Affairs”, the Oldenburg International Film Festival will host the visit of one of Europe’s most highly-regarded political figures, Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Asselborn, who will be in attendance on September 17th as a guest of the Festival, which this year will once again host the European Film Academy jurors for the “European Discovery Award – Prix FIPRESCI”.

“Foreign Affairs” is a remarkable documentary that offers an extraordinary perspective and rare glimpse into the life of Jean Asselborn, Europe’s longest serving Minister of Foreign Affairs, taking us both straight into the heart of global politics and the everyday life of “Jang”. We share his engagement with diplomacy and hope that he carries in his function as a politician, but also in the intimate moments of solitude that he experiences during his unrestrained race around a world marked by major political crises. On this prestigious occasion, in attendance with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pasha Rafiy will present his documentary to the audience in Oldenburg.

DISCOVERY AWARD 2016

The jury will gather in Oldenburg on Saturday September 17th and will announce the official final five nominees during the Festival’s Closing Night Gala at the Oldenburg State Theater on September 18th.

The announcement of the winner of the 2016 “European Discovery Award – Prix FIPRESCI“ will take place during the 29th European Film Awards on December 10th in the city of Wroclaw. We are excited to welcome the nomination committee composed of renowned members of the EFA and FIPRESCI to Oldenburg:

The 36th annual Atlantic Film Festival announces its full festival program, featuring over 225 films and a full slate of special events, to be presented over eight days in Halifax, September 15-22.

"This year we are delivering as your curator of epic and unforgettable stories across the spectrum of every taste like never before. Audiences flock to film festivals to be moved, challenged, shaken and stirred and this year’s program guarantees all of that and beyond”, said Wayne Carter, Executive Director.

Adding to the already impressive list of previously announced Gala Presentations – Opening Night Gala Maudie (Sept. 15), Friday Night Gala Weirdos (Sept. 16), Sunday Night Gala: Reel East Coast Shorts (Sept. 18), and Wednesday Night Gala Perfume War (Sept. 21) – are the exciting announcements of four additional Gala Presentations to complete the 2016 program.

The Saturday Night Gala presentation on Sept. 17 will be American Honey, written and directed by Andrea Arnold (Wasp, Red Road). The film follows Star (Sasha Lane), a teenage girl from a troubled home, who runs away with a travelling sales crew selling Magazine subscriptions door to door. Finding her feet in this gang of teenagers, one of whom is Jake (Shia LaBeouf), she soon gets into the group's lifestyle of hard-partying nights, law-bending days and young love. Candid, bold and powerful, with an almost non-stop music track ranging from rap to ballad, American Honey is an engrossing and exhilarating coming-of-age film that examines frayed youth with surprising depth. American Honey is produced by Film4, Parts & Labor, Maven Pictures, and the British Film Institute, and is distributed in Canada by Elevation Pictures.

Theatre of Life, from director Peter Svatek, is the Atlantic Film Festival Monday Night Gala on Sept. 19 – and also part of this year’s inaugural NFB Showcase. For Expo Milano 2015, renowned chef Massimo Bottura, whose Osteria Francescana was named world’s best restaurant in 2016, invited 60 of his international confrères to join him in transforming food destined for the dumpster into delicious and nutritious meals for Italy’s hungriest residents. A visual feast in itself, Theatre of Life puts a human face on its powerful message of social justice while raising awareness about the enormous environmental impact of food waste. Theatre of Life is produced by Triplex Films and The National Film Board of Canada.

This year’s Tuesday Night Gala: Français will be Xavier Dolan’s Juste la fin du monde (It’s Only the End of the World), winner of the Grand Prix at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. After 12 years of absence, a writer goes back to his hometown, planning on announcing his upcoming death to his family. As resentment soon rewrites the course of the afternoon, fits and feuds unfold, fuelled by bitterness and fear, while all attempts of empathy are sabotaged by people’s incapacity to listen, and love. Produced by Sons Of Manual and MK Productions, Juste la fin du monde is distributed in Canada by Entertainment One.

The Festival's Closing Night Gala presentation on Thursday, Sept. 22 will be Manchester by the Sea, written and directed by Academy Award® nominated filmmaker, Kenneth Lonergan (You Can Count on Me). When his older brother dies, Lee (Casey Affleck) is granted custody of his teenage nephew (Lucas Hedges). As they both adjust to their new lives, Lee struggles with the many ghosts of his past, including his estranged ex-wife Randi (Michelle Williams) who makes her way in and out of his past and present. Produced by K Period Media, Manchester by the Sea is distributed in Canada by Mongrel Media.

Featuring the newest and most anticipated films of the year, moviegoers will want to be first in line to see the twelve films comprising the 2016 Special Presentations, sponsored by Cineplex Events. Savour the sights and sounds of soon to be award-winning films: Denial, recounting Deborah E. Listadt’s (Rachael Weisz) legal battle for historical truth against Holocaust denier David Irving (Timothy Spall); The Dressmaker, an Australian revenge comedy-drama starring Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth; Elle, a French psychological thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Isabelle Huppert; Gimme Danger, Jim Jarmusch’s affectionate tribute to Iggy Pop and The Stooges; The Handmaiden (Agassi), a South Korean erotic psychological thriller from writer-director Park Chan-wook; I, Daniel Blake, the latest Palme d’or prize-winner from celebrated filmmaker Ken Loach; Julieta, based on three short stories by Alice Munro and brought to the screen by Pedro Almodóvar; Mean Dreams, a coming-of-age thriller from writer-director Nathan Morlando and starring Bill Paxton; Patterson, Jim Jarmusch’s tale of a bus driver poet played by Adam Driver; Personal Shopper, a ghost story set in the fashion underworld of Paris starring Kristen Stewart; Toni Erdmann, a German comedy-drama written and directed by Maren Ade; and Trespass Against Us, following a family living on the wrong side of the law in provincial England, and starring Michael Fassbender and Brendan Gleeson.

Two new film programs are being announced this year. The first being Restored! which focuses on a new film preservation each year. The 2016 selection offers Multiple Maniacs, John Waters’ gloriously grotesque, unavailable-for-decades second feature, made in 1970 on a shoestring budget in Baltimore.

The second is the inaugural NFB Showcase, celebrating our nations oldest and most celebrated film institution with a suite of screenings highlighting their latest productions. Featured documentaries are Angry Inuk (Alethea Arnaquq-Baril), Bluefin (John Hopkins), Gun Runners (Anjali Nayar), The Gift (Niobe Thompson), and We Can’t Make the Same Mistake Twice (Alanis Obomsawin), along with nine additional films in a NFB Shorts program.

Rounding out this year’s complete AFF program is a top-tier line up of features and documentaries from Canada and throughout the world. Viewers will delight in a wide range of films, including Canadian films: Below Her Mouth, First Round Down, Hello Destroyer, Old Stone, Two Lovers and a Bear, Unless and Window Horses; international award-winners: L’Avenir (France/Germany), Land of Mine (Denmark/Germany), A Man Called Ove (Sweden), The Salesman (Iran/France) and Transpecos (USA); and Canadian Premieres of international titles: Crosscurrent (China), Moon Dogs (UK), Papa:Hemingway in Cuba (USA/Canada), and She Remembers He Forgets (Hong Kong), among many more.

Select documentaries include: the rotoscoped recount of America’s first mass school shooting, Tower; a look at champion show chicken breeders in Chicken People; a wide ranging musical celebration of Austin City Limits in A Song for You; a gripping, psychological thriller, and winner of a Special Jury Prize at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, Kate Plays Christine; and Dilip Mehta’s profile of porn star turned Bollywood star, Sunny Leone, in Mostly Sunny; among many other captivating and enlightening titles.

The Atlantic Film Festival will once again feature French language films from Canada in partnership with Quebec Cinema, including feature films Boris sans Béatrice (Denis Côté), King Dave (Daniel Grou) and Les Mauvaises Herbes (Louis Bélanger), along with nine short films in Courts métrages. All films in the Quebec Cinema program are in French with English Subtitles.

Also included in this year’s line up are Short Film Programs, featuring both a Canadian and international selection, and the Festival’s popular ViewFinders: Films for Youth program.

The 2016 Festival will host several one-of-a kind special events and parties to celebrate the movies, the people and the city of Halifax. In addition to the Opening Night Party is the return of the Festival Music House Atlantic presented by Radio Starmaker Fund. The night will feature a stellar line up, including performances by Atlantic Canada’s Paper Lions, Amelia Curran and Joel Plaskett.

One of the world’s most established co-production/co-financing markets, Strategic Partners is a one-stop shop for projects looking for partners and will take place as part of the 36th Atlantic Film Festival, Sept 15-17.  A global trendsetter, the event attracts producers whose projects represent fresh and innovative ways to tell stories, across all platforms. Priority is given to projects considered to have both commercial and international appeal.  Strategic Partners provides a full agenda of 25 minute, pre-scheduled 1-2-1 meetings with investors/broadcasters/distributors/sales agents, participation in investor and co-production focused roundtable sessions, cutting edge panels and visionary keynote speakers. The event’s two-day linear program is designed to provide unparalleled access to international co-production/ co-financing possibilities. All of this happens under one roof, set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Film Festival and the vibrant, coastal city of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Featured sessions include Opening Keynote speaker, Producer of The Last King of Scotland, The Constant Gardener and A Most Wanted Man, Andrea Calderwood (Potboiler Productions, UK), as well as a conversation with Nordic Broadcasters, Liselott Forsman (YLE, Finland) and Lars Hermann (DR, Denmark). In addition there will be two panel discussions. On Day One, International industry leaders across existing and new financing and distribution platforms will explore the shift in how feature film is treated as a medium, and how audience viewing habits have triggered an adjustment in how content is financed and distributed. The second topic will consider television’s role in a world whose borders are disappearing as fast as SVOD’s proliferate. What are the identifiable trends across the globe? The intersection of domestic vs. international audience appeal and the producer’s ability to harness opportunities for content export are on the front line of this discussion.

Strategic Partners is financed with the support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Telefilm Canada as the Presenting Partner and Signature Partners, Bell Media, and CTV. Gold Partners include: Canada Media Fund, Canadian Media Production Association and Super Channel. Strategic Partners is a convergence of talent and innovation, producing tangible results.

You Can Count on Me).

Unprecedented four-year, career-spanning series at The Cinefamily Wiseman making a rare Los Angeles appearance for opening weekend Begins Thursday, August 25  -  Master Class with Wiseman, Saturday, August 27  - screening of newly restored classic Titicut Follies.

For tickets and complete series screening info

http://www.cinefamily.org/films/the-complete-works-of-frederick-wiseman-pt-1-1967-1976/

Non-profit cinematheque The Cinefamily kicks off an exciting new documentary film program, UNORTHODOX, which will begin with the first night of a four-year, career-spanning retrospective of the work of veteran documentary filmmaker FREDERICK WISEMAN with a screening of a newly restored 35mm print of TITICUT FOLLIES on Saturday, August 27th at Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater in West Hollywood, CA.

Wiseman will appear in-person for a Q&A after the screening on Saturday, August 27th to discuss his first foray into non-fiction filmmaking and touch on his 50 years of filmmaking experience. Wiseman will also appear on Thursday, August 25th at the Vista Theater to teach a Master Class on filmmaking.

"It's unprecedented for Cinefamily to commit to such a large retrospective of a single filmmaker--but Wiseman's incredible breadth is matched by his consistency, each film another perfect brick in a lifelong edifice of brilliant work," says Hadrian Belove, Executive Creative Director and Head Programmer of The Cinefamily. "Watching all 42 films will be an exciting journey, and Titicut Follies is the best way to kick off our new documentary series, UNORTHODOX"

"Even though he's the greatest American documentarian of the century," Belove continues, "somehow he's never really been properly celebrated in Hollywood--until now."

This brand new 35mm print of Titicut Follies will receive its first showing in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 27th at Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax, and will continue a run at Cinefamily through Wednesday, August 31st, followed by a week-long run of his second feature film, High School (1968), also newly restored. The 35mm prints were preserved and restored by the Library of Congress National Audio-Visual Conservation Center from original camera negatives in the Zipporah Films Collection.

"I am very pleased that Cinefamily is doing a complete retrospective of my films," Frederick Wiseman states. "This will give the audience a chance to see them on a big screen and for those interested to find the thematic connections."

Cinefamily will continue the first quarter of the filmmaker's full career retrospective with screenings of Law and Order (1969), Hospital (1970), Basic Training (1971), Essene (1972), Juvenile Court (1973), Primate (1974), Welfare (1975), and Meat (1976) running every Saturday beginning September 3rd, 2016. The next three Fall seasons will cover the remainder of his career, to run during the Fall of 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The first feature-length film by documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman, Titicut Follies (1967) is a cinéma-vérité portrait of the patients of Bridgewater State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, a correctional institution based in Massachusetts. Over 29 days, Wiseman documented the appalling patient conditions inside Bridgewater, which included unsanitary living environments, public humiliation, and other basic human rights violations. Banned upon its 1967 release due to questions of ethics and patients' rights, Wiseman's Zipporah Films finally released home distribution rights to Titicut Follies on DVD in 2007.

The Denver Film Society announced today it will host their third annual CineLatino Film Festival September 22 - 25 to coincide with Hispanic Heritage month. The four-day long event will celebrate the best in cinema from Latin America, Mexico, Europe and the United States. The Festival will open with The Vessel, executive produced by Terrence Malik staring Martin Sheen and close with Desierto, the directorial debut of Jonás Cuarón staring Gael García Bernal and Jeffery Dean Morgan. In addition, the Festival will host a special first-look at the recently completed local short documentary Clever, from Director Alan Domínguez and Oscar-winning producer, Daniel Junge.

Clever is the extraordinary story of Gerardo Lopez, a former member of the notorious MS13, who now works to keep young people in Denver out of gangs and focused on creating a positive direction for their lives. The film is an unflinching look into the deep heart of a man who refuses to be owned by his mistakes and a system that refused to think he could change. Lopez, along with Director Alan Domínguez and Director of Photography Aaron Kopp will be on hand for a Q&A after the film.

“Whether it is celebrating the innovative approach of the filmmakers behind The Vessel, the incredible work of local Latino community, or the next generation of great directors from Mexico, we could not be more thrilled to announce this year’s lineup for CineLatino,” says Ernie Quiroz, Denver Film Society Programming Manager. “There are so many important stories that need to be told, and for 4 days at the Sie FilmCenter, we get to shine a spotlight on some of the best films from the US, Latin America, Spain and Mexico.”

In addition to the team behind Clever, CineLatino will welcome Julio Quintana, the director of the Opening Night film, The Vessel. The film was shot in Puerto Rico and in both English and Spanish with a bilingual cast (including Martin Sheen). When the film opens theatrically, exhibitors will be able to choose between the English or Spanish version, based on the preferences of their market. Opening Night will serve as the Colorado premiere for the film.

This year’s festival will feature three films starring Gael Garcia Bernal. Desierto, the directorial debut Jonás Cuarón (who co-wrote Gravity, with his father, Oscar winning Director, Alfonso Cuarón) will close out the Festival.  Neruda, the latest from director Pablo Larraín (The Club, No, Tony Manero), which screened at Cannes as part of the Director’s Fortnight section. Finally, Eva No Duerme, a surreal film about the strange true story of the kidnapping of Eva Peron’s body during the military coup in 1955. Bernal plays the bizarre and creepy role of Admiral Emilio Massera.

Rounding out the lineup, Guatemala’s first Academy Award entry (Best Foreign Lanuguage), Ixcanul, will also screen. The film is in both Spanish and the Mayan K’iche dialect. Additional highlights of this year’s festival include a free-family screening of fan-favorite, Nacho Libre, in partnership with Denver Botanic Gardens and a free preview screening of the documentary Willie Velasquez: Empowering People in partnership with PBS and Latino Public Broadcasting. The documentary, is a topical look at the man who led the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project, underscoring the growing power of the Latino vote.

All-access Festival passes are on sale now. A complete Festival pass to CineLatino is $70 for DFS members and $85 for Non Members. The pass includes all films, as well as access to all special events, receptions and parties. Visit DenverFilm.org for more information and to purchase your pass. NARRATIVE

Camino a La Paz/Road to La Paz - Argentina/Netherlands- (Director: Francisco Varone)
In Spanish with English subtitles
Writer/ Sebastian is 35-years-old and unemployed, with only his father’s old Peugeot 505 to his name. When fate brings him a man in search of a ride, Sebastian sees no other choice but to take the opportunity. The man is Jalil, an elderly devout Muslim, and his destination is La Paz, the capitol of Bolivia some 2,000 miles from Buenos Aires. Both men are at a crossroads, and the journey to La Paz not only takes them to the north but also places them on a touching and often funny road of self-discovery.

Desierto– USA – (Director: Jonás Cuarón)
In English and Spanish with English subtitles
From Jonás Cuarón and Alfonso Cuarón, the acclaimed filmmakers of Gravity, comes a unique, modern vision of terror.  Desierto is a visceral, heart-pounding suspense-thriller packed with tension and suspense from start to finish, starring Gael García Bernal (The Motorcycle Diaries and Y Tu Mamá También) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen).

What begins as a hopeful journey to seek a better life becomes a harrowing and primal fight for survival when a deranged, rifle-toting vigilante chases a group of unarmed men and women through the treacherous U.S.- Mexican border.  In the harsh, unforgiving desert terrain, the odds are stacked firmly against them as they continuously discover there’s nowhere to hide from the unrelenting, merciless killer.

Eva No Duerme/Eva Doesn’t Sleep - Argentina /France /Spain – (Director: Pablo Agüero)
In Spanish with English subtitles
After a military coup in 1955, Juan Domingo Peron is deposed and forced to flee Argentina. He does so before ensuring proper arrangements for the embalmed body of his deceased wife, Eva Perón. The military junta kidnaps the body and launches a decades long odyssey in which the corpse is transported throughout Europe. Pablo Agüero’s visionary and unforgettable interpretation of Peron’s body’s journey is suspenseful, surreal, and features the supporting work of Gael Garcia Bernal at the peak of his acting powers.

Ixcanul - Guatemala / France – (Director: Jayro Bustamante)
In Spanish and Mayan K’iche’ with English
María, a young 17 year old Mayan girl, lives and works with her parents on a coffee plantation at the foothills of an active volcano in Guatemala. An arranged marriage awaits her. Although Maria dreams of going to the “big city,” her condition as an indigenous woman does not permit her to change her destiny. Unforeseen circumstances put her life at risk, forcing her to go out into the modern world where her life is saved, but at a steep price.

La Tierra y La Sombra/Land and Shade - Columbia – (Director: César Augusto Acevedo)
In Spanish with English subtitles
Winner of the Camera D’Or at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, César Acevedo’s beautifully austere feature film debut uses Colombia’s expansion of the sugar industry as a backdrop to this drama about an old farmer who returns to his family after abandoning them 17 years ago. His son has developed a deadly lung disease caused by the fires that are set every night to clear the land that surrounds them, leaving his wife and daughter-in-law in charge of the farm. Meanwhile, the sugar cane workers are threatening to go on strike, an action that might have dire consequences for this family.

Magallanes - Peru/Argentina/Spain – (Director: Salvador del Solar)
In Spanish and Quechua with English subtitles
Actor Salvador del Solar debuts a political thriller that digs deep into Peru’s recent military abuses and its population’s scarred collective unconscious. Harvey Magallanes hasn’t made much of his life since being a soldier. He drives around his former Colonel, now aged and senile, and makes extra money as a taxi driver. When he picks up a woman he recognizes from his time as a soldier during the repression of the Shining Path, Magallanes is overcome with guilt and the need for justice. Del Solar assembles an all-star cast—Damián Alcázar, Federico Luppi, Magaly Solier—for powerful results.

Neon Bull/Boi Neon - Brazil/Uruguay/Netherlands – (Director: Gabriel Mascaro)
In Portuguese with English subtitles
From the heart of Brazil’s vaquejada rodeo culture comes a unique study of character and dissection of gender. Iremar is a cowhand who travels from event to event with a group of bulls, his helper Zé, driver Galega, and her pre-teen daughter Cacá. Crisscrossing the northeast countryside, they represent a distinctive microcosm of individuals who are multidimensional to the point of idiosyncrasy—Galega supplements her income as an exotic dancer and Iremar has a passion for designing women’s clothing. Gabriel Mascaro’s follow-up to August Winds is a beautifully shot exhibition that goes against the grain.

Neruda - Chile / Argentina / Spain / France – (Director: Pablo Larraín)
In Spanish with English subtitles
Pablo Larraín (The Club, No, Tony Manero) weaves an engrossing metafictional fable around the 1948 manhunt for celebrated poet and politician Pablo Neruda, who goes underground when Chile outlaws communism and is pursued by an ambitious police inspector (Gael García Bernal) hoping to make a name for himself by capturing the famous fugitive.

Viaje - Costa Rica – (Director: Paz Fábrega)
In Spanish with English subtitles
Luciana and Pedro meet at a costume party and, after an impulsive kiss, decide to spend the night together. But this is not your stereotypical one night stand. They both feel a connection and, the following morning, Pedro invites her to join him for the weekend after revealing that he has to leave for a three-week assignment at a biological research station. And so begins a journey that may or may not cement their relationship. Shot in lush black-and-white, this simply-told and beautifully acted story is refreshing, tender and full of heart.

The Vessel– USA – (Director: Julio Quintana)
In Spanish and English with English Subtitles
Music. Dancing. Fireworks. Childbirth. These are just a few things that vanished from the quaint fishing village of Soledad after a massive tidal wave crushed the local elementary school, washing forty-six children out to sea. Ten years later a young man named Leo (Lucas Quintana) drowns, only to reawaken three hours later. The local priest, played by Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Martin Sheen, believes this may be a sign from God. But when Leo feels compelled to build a mysterious structure out of the old school's remains, he sets the town aflame with passions long forgotten. A story of romantic, familial and spiritual love, The Vessel (El navio) is in the end about those mysteries beyond our realm of understanding. Executive produced by the legendary Terrence Malick and shot on location in Puerto Rico.

The Violin Teacher/ Heliopolis– Brazil – (Director: Sérgio Machado)
In Portuguese with English subtitles
After failing to be admitted into the renowned São Paulo Symphonic Orchestra, Laerte, a talented violinist, is reduced to giving music classes to teenagers in a public school in Heliópolis, the biggest favela of Brazil. Among his struggles to adapt, Laerte has to relearn the transformative power of music through his students who need it most. Inspired by the true story of the Baccarelli Institute, a music school founded in 1996 in Heliópolis, The Violin Teacher charts the harsh class distinction between Laerte’s world of concert halls and privilege and the world of his students, rife with poverty and crime.

DOCUMENTARY

Burden of Peace– Guatemala/Netherlands – (Director: Joey Boink)
In Spanish with English subtitles
Burden of Peace tells the impressive story of Claudia Paz y Paz, the first woman to lead the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Guatemala. The country that has been ravaged for years by a devastating civil war, in which nearly 200,000 Mayan Indians were systematically massacred, is today one of the most violent countries in the world. Claudia starts a frontal attack against corruption, drug gangs and impunity and does what everyone had hitherto held to be impossible: she arrests former dictator Efraín Rios Montt on charges of genocide. His conviction becomes the first conviction of a former head of state for genocide in a national court in the world history.

Since her first year in office, Claudia gave access to filmmakers of Framewerk, Joey Boink and Sander Wirken. It resulted in an intimate glimpse into the life of a woman who wants to change her country and therefore brings immense sacrifices. The documentary was released during the Movies that Matter Film Festival, March 2015, The Hague. The film has screened at festivals around the world, was nominated for a Golden Calf for Best Documentary at the Netherlands Film Festival 2015, and won awards at film festivals in Biarritz, Brussels, Bratislava and Vienna.

Clever– USA – (Director: Alan Domínguez)
In English
This short documentary details the life and work of Gerardo Lopez (a.k.a. Clever), a Denver-based gang interventionist. Formerly of the notorious MS13 from Los Angeles, 'Clever' details his way out of gang life, his work in keeping youth from making the same mistakes, and his extraordinary tale of survival once he made the courageous decision to move his young family away from the negative influences of his youth.

Post film Q&A with the Colorado-based team: Director Alan Dominguez, Subject Gerardo Lopez and Director of Photography Aaron Kopp.

FREE SCREENINGS

Nacho Libre– USA – (Director: Jared Hess)

Donning a spandex outfit, mask, and cape, Nacho becomes a hero for the ages -- but can he win the heart of a woman of the cloth?

Willie Velazquez: Empowering the People – USA – (Director: Hector Galan)
In English and Spanish with English subtitles
In Willie Velazquez: Empowering the People, a production of Galan Incorporated and Latino Public Broadcasting, viewers meet the man who led the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project and launched 1,000 voter registration drives in 200 cities, paving the way for Latinos to have a voice in government and underscoring the growing power of the Latino vote.

The 73rd edition of the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematigrafico off and running

By Alex Deleon

The 73rd edition of the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematigrafico, otherwise known as the Venice Film Festival, is off and running.

With an overwhelming cornucopia  of films of all kinds to choose from --new Hollywood star vehicles, old restored classics, documentaries and feature films from around the globe, shorts, experimental films, etc.  one is faced with what the Italians call "l'imbarazzo della scelta"  -- Choice Overload  -- which is par for the course at major festivals like Venice.

In such a situation veteran festivaleers such as Yours Truly try to see unusual films which are not likely to turn up elsewhere and, for the time being, take a pass on most big name films which which will definitely show up at other festivals  or at commercial screenings on the streets of all major cities.

In the first couple of days the first five films I have looked in on were all in different theaters and all in different languages, to wit; Icelandic, Hebrew, English, Croatian, and Korean. (Capsule reviews below)

The grand opener on August 31 was the American biggie "LA LA Land", starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, about a jazz pianist who falls for an aspiring actress in Los Angeles. Youthful director. Damien Chazelle, 31, had a critical success "Whiplash" two years ago which also dealt with musicians. The stars graced the opening night red carpet and the pic went over big with the Italian audience and critics.

WORLD’S LARGEST FILM FESTIVAL FOR YOUNG FILMMAKERS ANNOUNCES CALL FOR FILMS FOR 11TH FESTIVAL

“NFFTY is like Sundance for young filmmakers.” – Bunee Tomlinson, NFFTY Filmmaker

SEATTLE, WA – The largest film festival for emerging directors, NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth), is now accepting entries for its upcoming 2017 festival, looking for the best films from filmmakers under 25 years of age. NFFTY 2017 will take place April 27 – 30 in Seattle, Washington and marks the organization’s 11th festival

Twice named One of the 50 Fests Worth the Entry Fee by MovieMaker Magazine (2016, 2014) and currently one of the Top 100 Rated Festivals on FilmFreeway, NFFTY provides a one of a kind first class venue for the world’s best young directors. Filmmakers and film fans together for four days of films, networking events, panels, virtual reality screenings and parties. NFFTY 2016 featured 227 awe-inspiring films that represented 33 states and 24 countries with attendance surpassing 12,000. Over the last decade, NFFTY has supported over 2,000 emerging filmmakers – many having gone on to make great contributions in the global filmmaking community.

With the 11th year, NFFTY plans on creating an experience that supports and promotes our young, talented filmmakers. NFFTY will continue to support its Young Women in Film initiative for the fourth straight year, as NFFTY makes strides to empower female filmmakers to embrace their craft in an industry where only 9% of films are directed by women. For three years in a row, over 40% of NFFTY films have been directed by female directors.

NFFTY not only showcases great entertainment, it creates it too. NFFTY Creative, the original content production arm of the organization, is producing original material for brand name clients and sponsors and giving NFFTY alumni real world opportunities to work on paid projects. Any filmmaker selected for NFFTY 2017 will be eligible for consideration on these projects. One of the most recent projects completed earlier this summer was a 15 part series for Expedia called Sight UnScene, that asked NFFTY filmmakers to explore unexpected destinations in their hometowns.

“NFFTY is the voice of the next generation of storytellers. I’m excited to kick off our 11th year and find the exceptional films from around the world and meet today’s newest and boldest talent” said Stefanie Malone, Executive Director of NFFTY.

NFFTY is accepting submissions for the 2017 film festival until January 30, 2017. Entries can be submitted online via FilmFreeway. More information including deadlines, entry fees and eligibility can be found at: www.nffty.org/submit.

For updates and news on NFFTY 2017, visit: www.facebook.com/nffty or www.nffty.org.
