OPENING NIGHT – FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7
FILM: STRIKE A POSE
In 1990, seven young male dancers joined Madonna on her most controversial world tour. Their journey was captured in the 1991 documentary, Truth or Dare. As a self-proclaimed ‘mother’ to her dancers, 6 gay and 1 straight, Madonna used the film to make a stand on gay rights and freedom of expression. The dancers became paragons of pride, inspiring people all over the world to dare to be who you are. Twenty five years later, the dancers share their own stories about life during and after the tour. View trailer: www.mifofilm.com/films/info/823
PARTY: Presented by Greater Fort Lauderdale CVB’s Office of Film, Music, Entertainment & Creative Industries, the lavish Opening Night Grand Event takes place in the NSU Art Museum following the film. With champagne flowing, hors d’oeuvres and entertainment including an operatic performance and surprise performances, all amidst the splendor of the museum’s works of art.
A TASTE OF FILM – MONDAY, OCTOBER 10 – Gallery of Amazing Things
A combined experience of Cinema and Culinary Delights! Celebrity Cruises is bringing their onboard Taste of Film experience to MiFo, where guests will enjoy a cocktail reception followed by comfortable seating while viewing The Happys. Delicious bites and drinks, inspired by the film, will be served throughout the movie.
FILM: THE HAPPYS
Tracy walks in on her newly minted 'movie star' boyfriend having sex with a man. After assessing her limited options, she returns to Mark with a deal-if he agrees to marry her, she'll forget the whole thing ever happened. Mark accepts her terms, but neither fully understands the sacrifices they have to make. Their relationship quickly deteriorates, but Tracy's world blossoms when she befriends the quirky residents in her Los Feliz neighborhood. As she discovers her sense of self and true passion for cooking, Tracy is a catalyst that forces everyone around her to grow and connect in unforeseen ways. The cast includes Janeane Garofalo and The Walking Dead's Melissa McBride. View trailer: www.mifofilm.com/films/info/839
CENTERPIECE - THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13 – Cinema Paradiso
FILM: KING COBRA
This ripped-from-the-headlines drama covers the early rise of gay porn headliner Sean Paul Lockhart a.k.a. Brent Corrigan, before his falling out with the producer who made him famous. When Sean decides he'd be better off a free agent, a cash-strapped pair of rival producers aim to cash in by any means possible and an all-out porn turf war ensues. With an all-star ensemble cast including James Franco, Christian Slater, Keegan Allen, Molly Ringwald and Alicia Silverstone, King Cobra is a powerful based-on-a–true-story drama exploring real-life greed and obsession. View trailer: www.mifofilm.com/films/info/840
CENTERPIECE PARTY follows the film, with music by DJ Barry Huffine.
CLOSING NIGHT – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16
FILM: PUSHING DEAD - Cinema Paradiso
The words AIDS and comedy are rarely used together, but Pushing Dead is a film in which it is appropriate. HIV-positive writer and bouncer Dan Schauble struggles to refill his drug prescriptions after a bureaucratic snafu drops him from his health plan. Schauble quietly panics that any disruption to his pharmaceutical regimen can have disastrous consequences for his health, but while he navigates the labyrinthine world of modern healthcare, the other people in his life suffer from their own personal trials and tribulations. View trailer: www.mifofilm.com/films/info/856

What sets the MBIFF apart from other festivals is our commitment to Independent film. Many of the attendees has stated that this was their favorite film festival to submit, and attend. Once you are here, you are family.
We house they most diverse judging panel anywhere. From Liberal to Conservative, Professional to Blue Collar. Your film gets a fair shake unlike no other festival. Many film judging panels only house film makers which can grade on a different curve than a film enthusiast that may be a Waitress, Doctor, or someone outside the film industry. We believe that your project receives a more overall perspective grading as to whether it entertains or informs a wider viewing audience rather than that of only an entire panel of film makers. Not to worry, we do have a film maker on board as a judge!
The goal of the founder and director Jerry Dalton, was to create a venue for the independent film makers that was not corrupted by the politics of many events. We do not care who is associated with the film, only whether it entertains and, or informs.
The MBIFF screens projects in a multi-million dollar theater, housing state of the art technology.
We look forward to viewing your film /project!

French Cinema Now Festival Returns for the Fifth Year in Seattle
SIFF and TV5MONDE present French Cinema Now, a celebration spotlighting the state of contemporary Francophone cinema. The week-long event runs September 29 through October 6 at SIFF Cinema Uptown, and features seventeen extraordinary French language features and documentaries from around the world.
The week kicks off on Thursday with the Opening Night film, Lost in Paris, which marks the return of filmmaking duo Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel (The Fairy). In this whimsical adventure, a small town librarian heads to Paris to help her elderly aunt (Oscar® nominee Emmanuelle Riva), but after a slew of wild catastrophes finds herself relying on a a seductive but annoying bum who refuses to leave her alone. An after-party will take place at Bastille Café + Bar in Ballard.
Other French Cinema Now films were created by seasoned directors like Robert Guédiguian, Joachim Lafosse, and Danielle Arbid, playing alongside relative newcomers like Mélanie Laurent, Louis Garrel, Guy Édoin, and Jihane Chouaib. Highlights include the winner of the VPRO Big Screen Award at the 2016 Rotterdam Film Festival, Ogres, about a close-knit group of actors from the traveling theatrical company Chekhov Cabaret who share everything, family, work, friendship and even their bodies; Made In France, a riveting thriller ripped from the headlines about a group of young men who are drawn into following Hassan, a psychopathic French Islamic convert; Reset (with introduction by Peter Boal, Artistic Director of the Pacific Northwest Ballet), a documentary taking viewers on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Opéra National de Paris, to witness artistic director Benjamin Millepied (the man behind the ballet for the film Black Swan) craft his first gala production for the company; and France's biggest documentary of the past year, Tomorrow, a film by Mélanie Laurent and Cyril Dion, about affecting positive change in a world faced with seemingly insurmountable environmental challenges.
As a bonus, Virginie Paradis, founder of French Truly, will be presenting two films, Parisienne and Eva & Leon, with entertaining and informative 30 minute visual introductions of the cultural context of the respective films.
SIFF Director of Programming, Beth Barrett is particularly enthusiastic about this year's program, "The 2016 French Cinema Now lineup is one of the most exciting in years - with four US premiere screenings, and award winning films from master filmmakers to first time directors - the world of Francophone Cinema is better than ever!"
Carl Spence, Chief Curator and SIFF Director, says "We're very excited about this year's lineup, being able to bring such a diverse group of films to the Francophile Seattle audience. Our continued partnership with TV5 Monde has allowed French Cinema Now to reach not only the Seattle viewers, but nationally through the TV5 Monde channel."

#BIFED 2016 International Competition and Gaia Student Awards Nominees Announced!
A total of 280 films that we have received from 58 countries this year all indicate the existence of vast knowledge regarding the ecological realities of the planet that we live in. The selection process with regard to the documentaries that you have produced with extraordinary efforts posed quite a challenge for us.
Some of the major themes of #BIFED 2016 include ‘coal mines and plants’, ‘return to village’, ‘global warming’, ‘disappearance of indigenous people’, and particularly the issue of ‘garbage.’ Migrations that are triggered by ecological problems, wars, and human rights violations also constitute one of the significant issues for our festival.
We are happy to announce the finalists of #BIFED 2016 International Competition and the candidates of Gaia Student Award. The programme regarding the special screenings has not been finalized yet; we will provide further information once this process is completed. You can follow our festival and us from our social media account and website, www.bifed.org. We hope that the film makers that we were not able to include in our programme this year will see this as a result of the limitation that our resources enforce on us in terms of time and space. The selection process that we have had to go through among all these documentaries has really proven to be highly challenging due to the quality of the films that we have received.

Venice 73 Closing it out on Saturday evening
by ALEX DELEON
Just back from closing night on the Lido. Saturday, September 11 --
In terms of number of outstanding flms seen and personalities such as J.P. Belmondo, Sophie Marceau, and John Landis encountered up close, it was the best film festival I've winged thru in years.
The closing awards watched on big screen in the Press Room was a noteworthy event in itself and I then caught a double header of prize winning flicks after that to close out the festival week.
"La Region Salvaje", misdirected by Amat Escalante (Mexico) which shared the Best Director award, ex aqueo, was a stomach turning pornographic abortion, but the very last closer was a thinking man's thriller called NOCTURNAL ANIMALS -- (Special Jury Prize) with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal ~~ and I even managed to snare two festival posters to enrich my wall collage in Budapest.
LIST of Best films will follow but My Absolute most memorable one was a Japanese musical and theatrical doc about the incredible Taiko Drummers of Sado Island. Title ONDEKOZA -- a Shochiku restoration from 1981 ~~ Totally blew me away. The drumming enters your bones!
Surprising Art film made by a Gangster (Yakuza) film specialist, Kato Tai.
Another main event was Natalie Portman's JACKIE and a disappointing main event was Malick's latest orgy of self indulgence "Voyage to blablablahh --
OKAY:
Here are the best ten films I saw selected from an incredibly rich array of possibilities:
1. Hjertasteinn (Heart of Stone)-- Beautiful Icelandic film about four teenagers, two boys and two girls, discovering sex and growing up in rough familial conditions in a fishing village far from the capital.
2. Mil Jeong (밀정 ~ The Age of Shadows) -- Historical drama about resistance to the Japanese occupation of Korea around 1920. This mix of shootout action, psychological drama, and historical detail was so powerful I felt like I was like watching a Beethoven symphony. Tremendous lead actor Song Gang-ho, 49, has the charisma and presence of a Korean John Wayne.
3. Gukoroku, Japanese psycho thriller Whodunnit and study of elite college cliques is the background for a young investigative Journalist conducting a one man investigation of an unsolved triple murder. Guess what -- he finds out that his own sister diddit. Slick style and highly appealing young actors got a long standing ovation. Young director Kei Ishikawa may be the next big thing in Japanese cinema helming.
4. Another Japanese winner was the dazzling restored print of
ONDEKOZA, (鬼太鼓座) "demon drum group"),
the 1979 theatrical documentary on the Taiko drummers of Sado Island with some hypnotic Japanese dances performed by women in dazzling Kimonos. One of a kind film done as a succession of fantastic drumming and highly stylized dance performances executed by Tai Katô, one of the ace directors of Yakuza eiga (Japanese gangster films).
This stands out as the most thrilling slambang screen experience of the entire week. Immediate inclusion in my BestTen of 2016. A truly unique and truly artistic film.
5. Piuma -- Searching social drama about irresponsible teenage pregnancy and the oroblems it causes. Erroneously called a "Light comedy" by the Italian press, which it is anything but --
6. Jackie -- Portman outdoes herself! Full review elsewhere.
7. THE BRAT (La Trovatella) Ford, 1931 --an early non-western by the king of Hollywood westerns. --very good. Typical twenties slang works to set the period in place. Fashion plate writer takes in homeless young woman he discovers at a kindly judges court -- But all he wants to do is study her as material for his new novel. A charming shot from the early days of sound and a perfect restoration job.
8. "Opfergang" (Veit Harlan, color, 1945)-- the usual love triangle in early German color process --plush straightforward social drama directed by talented Third Reich director Harlan who was a favorite of Propaganda Minister Goebbels. Noted for the ultimate Nazi anti-Semitic tirade picture. "Jud Suess".
9. "Réparer les Vivants" --Dir.. Katell Quilévéré, with Emanuelle Seignier (Mrs. Roman Polanski) and popular French Algerian actor Tahar Rahim (The Cut). The subject is Heart transplanting -- most vividly, indeed gorily, presented -- and the morality issues surrounding the organ donation in question. Gripping and thoughtful.
10. "Nocturnal Animals", Tom Ford (Silver Lion jury award) with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal
The story within the story was better than the framing real story set in the wealthy upper strata of today's Los Angeles. Basically a glossy psycho thriller using the device of a fiction novel used by the writer to recapture the heart of his lost love twenty years later. Slick savvy entertainment. Texan Tom Ford won the hearts and minds of the awards night audience by delivering his acceptance speech in near perfect Italian!

MOUNTAINFILM:
The mountain film is one of the oldest genres and uses its own imagery. We are all familiar with its clichéd images: death-defying panoramas of mountain ridges, glaciers and rock faces alternating with heart-stopping shots of fingers clawing for hand-holds, boots losing their footing and rocks breaking free. But the harsh mountain world is also portrayed for its symbolic and mythical significance. In this vertical wilderness, human resolve is confronted with all its deepest fears and vulnerabilities. The mountain film tells the story of man’s struggle with nature and records the stunning beauty of the untamed mountain world. The mountain film uses this world as its backdrop or metaphor for narrating the story of man’s confrontation with the unadulterated wilds.

Trash Fire
Introduction and post screening Q&A with filmmaker Richard Bates, Jr.
“TRASH FIRE starts in a dark, desperate place and only gets darker and more desperate. It will leave you shaken, but the visceral experience of it is exhilarating. Four out of five skulls” – BloodyDisgusting Richard Bates Jr.(EXCISION, SUBURBAN GOTHIC, Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival favorites) returns with another brilliantly twisted and dark story of familial love. At a relationship crossroads, Isabelle (Angela Trimbur, THE FINAL GIRLS) insists she and her boyfriend, Owen (Adrian Grenier, ENTOURAGE), go on a road trip to meet his family—his unbearably burned sister Pearl (AnnaLynne McCord, EXCISION) and nasty grandmother Violet (Fionnula Flanagan, THE GUARD, THE OTHERS). As a tangled web of secrets, lies, and murder unfolds, Bates masterfully pulls off a genre-subverting gut-punching final act that will leave you astonished. Neither Heaven Nor Earth
“It’s effective, spooky and moves beyond the clichés of combat into troubling political and metaphysical territory.” – A.O. Scott, New York Times Afghanistan 2014. As the withdrawal of French troops approaches, Captain Antares Bonassieu (Jérémie Renier, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, L’ENFANT, SAINT LAURENT) and his squad have been assigned a surveillance mission in a remote valley of Wakhan, on the border of Pakistan. Despite the troops’ determination, control of the secluded valley slowly falls out of their hands. One dark night, soldiers begin to mysteriously disappear. In his first feature, director Clément Cogitore transforms the dusty Afghan landscape into a setting for a breathtaking metaphysical thriller, recalling the eerie mystery of PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK and the paranoid horror of John Carpenter’s THE THING. A critical success at Cannes, NEITHER HEAVEN NOR HELL is a contemporary ghost story that conveys the madness of war with seething pressure and unrelenting terror. In a quest across dark dimensions, Reggie is reunited with brothers Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) and Jody (Bill Thornbury) for one last time. The Eyes of My Mother
“A Sundance Next standout, Nicolas Pesce's impressive, highly original horror fable is the stuff of very beautiful nightmares.” – Variety In their secluded farmhouse, a former surgeon teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of Francisca's family life, deeply traumatizing the young girl, but also awakening some unique curiosities. Though she clings to her increasingly reticent father, Francisca's loneliness and scarred nature converge years later when her longing to connect with the world around her takes on a distinctly dark form. Shot in crisp black and white, the haunting, and at times disturbing, visual compositions of THE EYES OF MY MOTHER evoke its protagonist's isolation and illuminate her deeply unbalanced worldview. My Father Die
“The swamp-thing progeny of BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (with a little CAPE FEAR thrown in), MY FATHER DIE offers blood-and-thunder Southern-gothic excess both tempered and heightened by vivid directorial texturing.” –Variety In this confident feature debut from Sean Brosnan (son of Pierce Brosnan, who produces), Joe Anderson (ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, HANNIBAL) stars as Asher, a boy left deaf and dumb at the age of 12 after an attack by his father, Ivan (Gary Stretch) leaves his brother dead. Ten years later, Asher is still training to avenge his brother's murder, and his father is rotting behind bars. But when Ivan is unexpectedly released, Asher's plans for revenge kick in. What starts as a simple revenge tale quickly turns into a horrific exploitation odyssey that channels Jeremy Saulnier's BLUE RUIN by way of Ted Kotcheff's Australian classic WAKE IN FRIGHT. “An experience you won’t forget in a hurry, MY FATHER DIE is a beautiful-looking slice of brutality and wanton destruction.” – Dread Central DIR/SCR Sean Brosnan; PROD Daniel J. Locked in her room without her medicine, she transforms into a hideous monster, while an obsessive private investigator uncovers the dark truth about her condition. A love letter to the Stuart Gordon/Frank Henenlotter mad science opuses of the '80's, BAD BLOOD: THE MOVIE is an amphibious twist on classic werewolf mythology. Generation 2017: Peril and Promise – Walking Fine Lines and Life on the Road
Selection Process for Feature Film Programme at Halfway Mark
In the two competitions Kplus and 14plus, 15 feature films have already been selected for the 40th edition of Generation. Exhibiting an impressive range of cinematic approaches, these productions tell the stories of young people on inner and outer journeys and capture a sense of longing for new and altered horizons. The complete programme for Generation will be made public in mid-January.
Opening Film 14plus
Michael Winterbottom is slated to open the programme of Generation 14plus in the newly renovated Haus der Kulturen der Welt with a special screening of his vibrant music documentary On the Road. Shot in the characteristic hybrid style that has become the English director’s trademark, his newest outing follows the members of the band Wolf Alice on tour as they travel back and forth across their native Great Britain, where they have caused quite a stir in recent years. The film intimately portrays life on the road, in all its ecstasy and exhaustion. The connection between the musicians and their fans is palpable and there is a fine interplay between watching and listening amongst concert and film audiences.
Generation14plus
Almost Heaven
United Kingdom
By Carol Salter
World premiere
Far from home, 17-year-old Ying Ling practices for her examination to become a mortician at one of China’s largest funeral homes. In addition to frequent qualms and farewell ceremonies, the everyday routine of this unusual occupation also serves up both humorous and life affirming moments. Carol Salter’s debut outing is an empathetic documentary portrait touching on fears, friendship and coming of age amidst ghosts and the dearly departed.
Butterfly Kisses
United Kingdom
By Rafael Kapelinski
World premiere
Jake and his friends pass their time hanging out in the courtyards of their high-rise development or in pool halls, talking about girls, watching pornos and getting drunk. Jake is burdened by a dark secret that distances him more and more from the others and drives him into dangerous isolation. Rafael Kapelinski stages his debut film in contrasting black and white, moving in respectful proximity to his characters, brought to life vividly here by an ensemble cast of new discoveries and young talents (including Thomas Turgoose - This Is England, Generation 2007).
Ceux qui font les révolutions à moitié n'ont fait que se creuser un tombeau (Those Who Make Revolution Halfway Only Dig Their Own Graves)
Canada
By Mathieu Denis, Simon Lavoie
European premiere
With epic scope and stunning polymorphism, the film follows a group of young people in Québec who resolve to form a revolutionary cell together in the aftermath of student protests. This unflinching work from Mathieu Denis (Corbo, Generation 2015) and Simon Lavoie employs its protagonists to play through what it might mean to instigate a revolution and devote one’s life to a cause in today’s world.
Emo the Musical
Australia
By Neil Triffett
International premiere
The forbidden high school love between Ethan, the shy Emo kid with suicidal tendencies, and chipper Christian activist Trinity previously delighted Generation audiences as a short film in 2014. Director Neil Triffett is back with his heartbreakingly funny musical grotesque, now in feature-film length, and chock full of even more colourful characters to light up the big screen.
Mulher do pai(A Woman and the Father)
Brazil / Uruguay
By Cristiane Oliveira
International premiere
After the death of her grandmother, 16-year-old Nalu is left to care for her father alone. Any hope of leaving her dismal village now seems to have receded far off into the distance. Cristiane Oliveira’s coming-of-age drama, a work of slowly paced cinema characterised by respectful intimacy and subtle physicality, paints the complex portrait of a relationship between an adolescent daughter and her blind father.
My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea
USA
By Dash Shaw
European premiere
He’s not exactly popular, he’s got friend problems, he wants to make it big with the school paper and he goes by the name of his inventor, Dash. In the school basement, he discovers a secret that rocks the very foundations of his world. Graphic novelist Shaw hopes that his film will reach 15-year-old nerds who are just as crazy about drawings and paintings as he himself was at their age. This work of animation virtually spilling over with ingenuity (and featuring the voice-over talents of Jason Schwartzman, Maya Rudolph, Lena Dunham and Susan Sarandon) is sure to delight young viewers outside of this particular demographic as well.
Krolewicz Olch (The Erlprince)
Poland
By Kuba Czekaj
European premiere
The action in The Erlprince builds and surges as dramatically as the ballad by Goethe from which it borrows its title. The boundaries between reality, desire and appearance are blurred in this futuristically tinged film about an extraordinarily gifted young man and his ambitious and wondrous mother. Expressed in a form as unconventional as the characters it portrays, the film oscillates between the poles of both science and nature and love and violence.
Weirdos
Canada
By Bruce McDonald
European premiere
Just after the end of the Vietnam War and in the midst of the American bicentennial celebrations of 1976, runaway Kit and his girlfriend Alice hitchhike their way along the east coast of Canada. Bruce McDonald (The Tracey Fragments, Panorama 2007) has managed to create a coming-of-age film that shines equally as a road movie, one driven by a fantastic soundtrack composed of deep cuts from the era in question. A rebellious trip in black and white, in which all sense of certainty gets left by the wayside.
GenerationKplus
As duas Irenes (Two Irenes)
Brazil
By Fabio Meira
World premiere
In the shimmering heat of Brazil, 13-year-old Irene discovers a dark secret her father’s been hiding: he has another family and even another daughter with the same name. Irene embarks on a risky game that could blow up in her face at any moment. The languid summer atmosphere of Fabio Meira’s feature film debut can’t hide the fact that something is simmering right under the surface.
Die Häschenschule - Jagd nach dem Goldenen Ei (Rabbit School - Guardians of the Golden Egg)
Germany
By Ute von Münchow-Pohl
World premiere
Scrappy city rabbit Max finds shelter in a hidden Easter bunny school after a misadventure with a model plane leaves him stranded far beyond the city limits. Here he encounters the keepers of the legendary Golden Egg, itself the coveted prize of scheming foxes. After an initial bout with boredom, the secret techniques of the Easter bunnies finally arouse Max’s curiosity. This lovingly drawn German animation film, based on the 1924 classic, is a pure delight buoyed by imagination and brisk pacing and graced with the voices of Senta Berger, Friedrich von Thun, Jule Böwe and Noah Levi.
Primero enero (January)
Argentina
By Darío Mascambroni
European premiere
Primero enero is the directorial debut of Argentinian filmmaker Darío Mascambroni. 11-year-old Valentino’s life goes off the rails when his parents get divorced, challenging him to see the world from a different angle. In a tender and moving father-son story, the director takes his protagonists and his viewers out to the countryside, into a world of heightened sensitivity.
Red Dog: True Blue
Australia
By Kriv Stenders
European premiere
Australian director Stenders delighted Generation audiences in 2011 with a legendary story about a very special dog. Now, at the centre of this sequel - which is also a prequel- the red canine is joined by 11-year-old Mick, who treasures his bond with his four-legged friend above all else. Destiny has brought the duo together on a farm in the Australian outback, where the two partake in mystical adventures and Mick encounters his first true love. With great humour and sensitivity, the film is a tale of growing up in a time of transformation.
Richard the Stork
Germany / Belgium / Luxemburg / Norway
By Toby Genkel, Reza Memari
World premiere
Even though everybody else thinks he’s a sparrow – Richard himself holds tight to the conviction that he is in fact a stork. In this fast-paced adventure, Toby Genkel and Reza Memari tell the story of a bird who sets off self-confidently on a winter trip to Africa in a literal rite of passage that simultaneously serves as an empathetic tale about otherness and self-discovery. This German-international co-production provides spellbinding entertainment with its fantastic and fanciful fable showcasing top-shelf animation.
Tesoros
Mexico
By María Novaro
World premiere
Siblings Dylan and Andrea set off with their new friends on a marvellous journey of discovery in search of long lost pirate loot. In refreshingly sunny images, María Novaro gets up close to her characters to tell a story of children confidently indulging their lust for life and curiosity. In a commune on Mexico’s Pacific coast, they are given space to go their own ways and together find something much more valuable than buried treasure.
Shi Tou (Stonehead)
People’s Republic of China
By Xiang Zhao
World premiere
10-year-old Shi Tou, the son of a migrant labourer, grows up alone with his grandmother. It’s so hard to tell right from wrong! Sharing a reward with a classmate or waiting until his father returns, obeying his teacher of protecting his friend – which one should he choose? With documental authenticity, Xiang Zhao paints a portrait of life in rural China and a society in which an entire generation has too often been left to grow up in the absence of their parents.
Lost in Politics: The third edition of the Berlin Critics’ Week opens with a conference on politics and cinema
From February 8 to 16 the German Film Critics Association will present the third edition of the ‘Berlin Critics’ Week’. The annual film and debate series will be launched with a conference on the political dimensions of contemporary cinema and the question, whether its political messages seem to prevail over artistic forms. Amongst others, we will welcome Greek director and producer Athina Rachel Tsangari (“Attenberg”, “Chevalier”), film critic Joachim Lepastier (Cahiers du Cinéma), philosopher Alexander Garcìa Düttmann and Carlos Gerstenhauer, chief producer for cinema and first features at Bayerischer Rundfunk.
After the considerable attention our first conference on the state of German cinema drew in February 2016 an opening conference will become a recurring part of the Berlin Critics’ Week.
Lost in Politics
Do films have to be political?
Or: On contemporary cinema, how it risks being taken over by content and why it is afraid of art
Films defending the weak and presenting moral heroes are ubiquitous. Maybe today there is a real demand for this kind of filmmaking, as it is being celebrated and awarded with countless prizes. Take for example Jacques Audiard’s dramatic refugee thriller “Dheepan”, that won Cannes in 2015, the essay film on Lampedusa, Gianfranco Rosi’s “Fuocoammare”, that triumphed in Berlin 2016 or this year‘s Golden Palm winner in Cannes, Ken Loach’s “I, Daniel Blake”, about a carpenter marginalized by the welfare bureaucracy.
Among the films with a political message we find boring and exciting, outstanding and exasperating ones. Yet all of them have one thing in common: they are being marketed as relevant and important. That also poses a challenge to film critics who far too often take up the political argument handed to them by the film and its defenders instead of actually talking about cinema: the political headline takes the place of aesthetic discourse.
On the eve of the film event that is routinely referred to as the most political of the big festivals, we will inquire the value of the political in cinema and ask how it is possible to make films politically instead of turning cinema into politics.
How seriously do films and their creators take their political engagement? Is a film only important if its topic is political? Or is that only a condition for it to be financed in the first place in a system of subsidies awarded by committees? And especially: what effect does it have on the art of filmmaking if cinema defines itself by thematic content? What does that mean for its most elementary means of expression: the artistic form?
Berlin Critics’ Week
The opening conference will be followed by the third Berlin Critics’ Week, a selection of seven screenings and debates. Contemporary films presented at Hackesche Höfe cinema will spark interdisciplinary discussions on cultural politics and aesthetics. Amongst the guests of the past editions were Richard Brody, film critic for the “New Yorker”, artist Heba Amin, festival directors Charles Tesson (Semaine de la Critique) and Hans Hurch (Viennale), producer Paulo Branco, filmmakers Philippe Grandrieux and Denis Côté, as well as actress Ariane Labed.
The Berlin Critics’ Week is organized by the German Film Critics Association.
