Welcome filmmakers to the Maryland International Film Festival-Hagerstown. We are excited about our 5th year coming up in April 1-3, 2016. For 5 years, we've been bringing in the finest films from around the world. The film festival became a 501(c)3 and launched in 2009 and now screens more then 70 films each year! Hollywood Director Joe Carnahan is our creative director. He has brought us such films as "The Grey" and "The A-Team" with Liam Neeson and now has Bad Boys 3 in pre-production. He also directs some of the hottest television shows like "The Blacklist." He has been a powerful partner in our festival! Most of our previous winners of Best Feature have obtained distribution. Last year's winner BEREAVE just signed a distribution deal and said, " I wish to take a moment to tell you that your hospitality and your wonderful festival helped our film stand out for distribution. Thank you for that and we'll be sending you more of our work in the future.” So join us! We look forward to having you screen at our 5th year anniversary!

The festival is conveniently located downtown, we're in the middle of the arts and entertainment district. And after the films we host some of the best after parties with live bands and fantastic food and drinks!

A message from the challenge's founder, Nic Novicki:

" I have been a working actor for thirteen years, on such shows as "Boardwalk Empire", "The Sopranos", and "Private Practice". As a disabled person myself, I rarely see disability present either in front of or behind the camera. As a producer, I realized that I have the power to change that. Since then, I have produced a multitude of projects and enlisted in the PGA.

I want this film challenge to empower disabled filmmakers, by taking their careers into their own hands with the support of seasoned veterans. Also creating a gateway for more exposure for people with disabilities in the media. "

The film challenge's purpose is to motivate disabled and non-disabled film makers to be proactive in the film industry and to supply them with a means of exposure for themselves and their projects.

Testimonies

-Testimony from Jenna Kannell, Winner Best Film, 2015 Disability Film Challenge:

"Entering the Disability Film Challenge changed my life. Though tough, it's fun and immeasurably worth the effort. I got to meet with an incredible mentor, and had the opportunity to watch my film "Bumblebees" in the legendary Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. Winning the DFC inspired me to try what I never thought I was capable of. As of now, my film has been accepted into twenty four film festivals, won five awards, received three nominations and three honorable mentions, gained two distributors, and is being used in schools to facilitate dialogues on compassion and disabilities. The film brought me closer to my family and my brother, who the story is about, encouraging him to speak in front of crowds and inspire dozens of people. It took me all over the globe, and brought me to discover a love for filmmaking I didn't know I had; I couldn't be more grateful. Even if we hadn't won, the experience alone of making a film in 48 hours is incomparable. The competition encourages the representation of a population often ignored by popular culture, honoring storytelling, equality, and empathy at a time when our society deeply needs it. The Disability Film Challenge is absolutely amazing."

__________

-Testimony from Steve Way, Winner Best Actor, 2015 Disability Film Challenge

"Words can’t describe how much fun I had participating in the 48 Hour Disability Film Challenge. While I had a great experience, it’s also an important and necessary outlet for people with disabilities to showcase their skills and to be recognized for them."

__________

-Testimony from Stephen and Lori Saux, Winners Social Media Award, 2015

"Thank you for the Disability Film Challenge. It was a great weekend. Stephen and I pushed ourselves and were able to see what we could do with 48 hours, 2 iPhones, a laptop, two kids, and no babysitter."

__________

-Testimony from Rachel Handler, Winner Best Actor, 2014 Disability Film Challenge:

"This film challenge was the perfect opportunity to create my first short film. The time limits pushed me to write and finish a script. Winning the best actor award gave me the chance to meet with a casting director in LA, which lead to landing my first agent in Hollywood!"

___________

An example of the 2015 Disability Film Challenge Assignment:

Last year the assigned genre was "Romantic Comedy" and props included items such as "balloon", "hairbrush", etc... Location options were settings such as "The Park", "The Beach", "In a Home", etc... This is not the genre, assigned props, or location options for this year's challenge, but merely an example of what types of rules to expect to be announced on April 1st.

A special feature of this film festival is the emphasis on education and mentoring. Free workshops to educate new filmmakers about how to succeed in the business, about acting, writing, directing and marketing indies and practical information about legal issues and how to get funding are a huge part of SAFILM every year – and SAFILM finds qualified industry pros to share their wisdom. Festival panels cover past success stories, with script to screen advice. Because the staff is comprised of filmmakers themselves, SAFILM understands the importance in educating about all aspects of filmmaking.

ABOUT THE SAN ANTONIO FILM FESTIVAL
We invite you to party with us on the red carpet as we celebrate a milestone in 2016:
The 22nd YEAR of SAFILM in the Alamo City. Nothing compares to the explosion of independent film in the heart of San Antonio for six fantastic days with four screens throughout the Alamo City from July 26 to 31, 2016.

In 2015, SAFILM garnered outstanding media coverage from local television, radio and newspapers, including extensive coverage from the San Antonio Current and the San Antonio Express-News. Overall, the festival screened more than 118 films.
While there is plenty of media coverage for the festival and the celebrities, your work, the independent films that make it into SAFILM, get tons of area news coverage - INCLUDING TELEVISION, NEWSPAPER, RADIO, BILLBOARD and SOCIAL MEDIA coverage.
San Antonio film critics regularly review numerous feature and short films for the festival so filmmakers have even more opportunities for documented recognition and special attention for their entries. The San Antonio Film Festival works hard to connect you with opportunities to publicize your film.

Does the writer maintain rights to the screenplay?
Yes, all screenwriters who submit to the SAFILM-San Antonio Screenplay Competition maintain the rights to their works.
Can anyone have access to the screenplay once submitted?
No, submitted screenplays are only accessible to the reader assigned to that specific screenplay and our staff. We do not own the rights to the submitted screenplays, so we do not distribute them publicly in any way.
Does my script have to be registered? No, however we do recommend registering your work with the WGA and/or the Library of Congress Copyright office.

ADAPTATIONS
Do you accept adapted screenplays?
Yes, we accept and welcome adapted screenplays. However, screenwriters who wish to submit an adapted screenplay must possess all rights to the source material or use source material in the public domain.
My screenplay is based off of a work in the public domain, may I still enter it in your competition?
Yes, we allow screenplays adapted from works in the public domain.
NOTE: All screenplays must be original works and the sole property of the applicant(s). Scripts containing fictional characters, settings, or other aspects gleaned from another author’s work are ineligible for our competition.

Must I provide documentation that I own all the rights to the source material?
We reserve the right to ask for verification that you own all the rights to the source material of an adapted work. Failure to provide verification if requested will result in the screenplay becoming ineligible for our competition.
Can I base my screenplay on historical events? Can my screenplay be based on a true story?
Yes!

MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS
Can one writer submit multiple scripts to the competition?
Yes, writers may submit as many
 different scripts as they'd like.
Can I submit both a feature length script and a short script?
Yes, writers may submit to both categories.
Can I submit two versions of the same screenplay as two separate entries?
No. We will only accept one version of the script as a regular submission

OTHER ELIGIBILITY QUESTIONS
Do you allow screenplays with multiple authors?
Yes, we allow screenplays with more than one author.
Can I submit a script that has previously been optioned?
No. If a submitted screenplay is optioned, produced or purchased at any point before the end of the judging period, that screenplay is ineligible for our competition.

PEN NAMES are a no-no ...
Can I submit a screenplay under a pen name?
No, we do not accept pen names.
If I were to win the competition and do not want my real name publicized to protect my privacy, can I request that SAFILM use only my pen name in association with any publicizing of my winning script?
If your screenplay advances in the competition and appears published on our site, you may inform us of the name you would like to use. However, we stress that for our application process, we do not allow pen names under any circumstances – all screenwriters must use their legal name on all submitted materials and applications.

AGE REQUIREMENTS
Do you have to be over the age of 18 to submit a screenplay? No, writers of all ages are encouraged to enter our competition.
I am under the age of 18. Can I submit my screenplay to the competition for free?
No, all entrants must pay the entry fees for their screenplays.
Can beginners join the competition or is this just for experienced writers? We welcome submissions from screenwriters at all levels of experience – from beginner to veteran. Whether this is your first screenplay or your fifty-first, we look forward to reading your work.

Support on KISSKISSBANKBANK

We are developing a high quality festival that becomes independent again after trying the adventure of Rothschild villa, owned by the city of Cannes that has been available for AVIFF for free in 2015 due to a decision of the culture service of the municipality, that we thank in passing, but inappropriate for this kind of event. The place although classified and splendid is not suitable for our festival and is located too far away from La Croisette.
This edition 2016 will see the AVIFF in the center of the city and facing the sea, near the port of Cannes.

To make the festival AVIFF even more attractive we open a portion of its funding participatory platform with KissKissBankBank on this link: http://www.kisskissbankbank.com/…/aviff-cannes-art-film-fes…
